ASSIGNMENT QUESTIONS FOR CSE STREAM (2025 SCHEME)

MODULE – 01 [QUANTUM MECHANICS]


Q1. What are matter waves. Arrive at an expression for de-Broglie wavelength & express it in other
forms.
Q2. State three uncertainty principles of Heisenberg’s and use the energy – time uncertainty to explain
the broadening of spectral lines.

Q3. Set up one- and three-dimensional time independent Schrodinger’s wave equation.

Q4. Write a brief note on – Physical significance of wave function, Principle of complementarity,
Expectation value & Quantum tunneling.

Q5. Derive an expression for the eigenvalue and eigen function for a particle inside the box (V = ꝏ).

Q6. Determine the energy eigenvalues, eigenfunctions of a particle confined in an infinite potential
well for the first three quantum states (n=1, 2, 3) and present their probability densities.

MODULE – 02 [ELECTRICAL PROPERTIES OF METALS & SEMICONDUCTORS]


Q1. Examine the shortcomings of classical free electron theory. What are the postulates of quantum
free electron theory of metals?
Q2. Explain the effect of impurity & temperature on electrical resistivity (Matheissen’s rule). And
discuss the success of quantum free electron theory.

Q3. What is Fermi–Dirac statistics? Define the function f(E). And illustrate how it changes with energy,
E and temperature, T.
Q4. Define fermi energy, Ef. Derive the expression for electron concentration, n in a conductor and
extend the same for Ef at 0K.

Q5. Define density of states for electrons. Derive an expression for electron concentration in an
intrinsic semiconductor.
Q6. Define energy gap in a semiconductor. Deduce an expression for fermi energy, E f of an intrinsic
semiconductor in terms of energy gap.
Q7. What is Hall effect? Derive an expression for Hall voltage in terms of Hall coefficient and highlight
its importance.

MODULE – 03 [SUPERCONDUCTIVITY]
Q1. Explain Meissner effect with the diagram and distinguish between Type - I and Type - II
superconductors (plot M-H dig.).
Q2. What is critical current (Ic) and field (Hc) in superconductivity? Draw the diagram & establish the
relation between them based on Silsbee’s rule.

Q3. What are phonons? Describe the mechanism of Cooper pair formation in BCS theory with suitable
diagrams and highlight any two it’s limitations.

MODULE – 04 [PHOTONICS]
Q1. Derive an expression for the energy density of incident radiation in terms of Einstein’s coefficients
and draw the conclusions.
Q2. Discuss the essential requisites for lasing action and outline the classifications of LASER with
applications.

Q3. Explain the principle, construction & working of semiconductor LASER with energy level
diagram.
Q4. Explain the construction & working of single photon avalanche photodiode (SPAD) with suitable
diagrams.

Q5. Explain the construction & working of superconducting nanowire single photon detectors
(SNSPDs). Write it’s any two advantages.
Q6. What is optical fiber? Define acceptance angle and numerical aperture, derive their expressions,
and state the condition for propagation of light.
Q7. Write a brief note on attenuation in optical fiber. Explain the construction & working of Mach –
Zehnder interferometer.

MODULE – 05 [QUANTUM COMPUTING]


Q1. State and explain Moore’s law. Compare classical computing with quantum computing.

Q2. Explain the representation of Qubit using Bloch sphere and mention any three properties of
Qubits.

Q3. State & prove two properties of Pauli’s matrices. Operate X, Y and Z matrices on |0>, |1> and |Ψ>
states.
Q4. What are Quantum gates? Apply the Hadamard gate to the states |0>, |1> and |Ψ>. Also, draw
its circuit symbol and the truth table.

Q5. Operate S – gate (Phase) and T – gate on |0>, |1> and |Ψ> states. Also, draw its circuit symbol
and the truth table.
Q6. Explain CNOT gate operation on all four basis states of a two-Qubit system. Present its circuit
symbol, standard matrix and truth table.
Q7. Present the circuit symbols, standard matrices and truth tables for Swap – gate, Controlled Z –
gate (C-Z) and Toffoli - gate
