COURSE OVERVIEW SCRIPT
Instructor:
"Now that we have gotten to know each other, let us talk about what this course is all about.
The title of our course is Understanding the Self. As the name suggests, this subject focuses on
understanding who we are as individuals and how different factors shape our identity.
Many people spend years studying different subjects, careers, and professions, but sometimes they
do not take enough time to understand themselves. This course gives us the opportunity to reflect on
our own experiences, beliefs, values, strengths, and weaknesses.
You may ask, 'Why is this course important?'
This course examines the nature of society and the factors that influence our personal identity. It
explores issues and concerns related to the self and aims to help students develop a deeper
understanding of themselves.
As college students, you are at a stage where you are making important decisions about your future.
The better you understand yourself, the better decisions you can make regarding your career,
relationships, and personal goals.
This course is not simply about memorizing theories. It is about discovering who you are and
understanding why you think, feel, and act the way you do."
Question to Students:
"When someone asks you, 'Who are you?', what is the first thing that comes to your mind?"
(Allow students to answer.)
Transition:
"Throughout this semester, we will explore different perspectives and theories that will help us
answer that question more meaningfully."
GOALS OF THE COURSE SCRIPT
Instructor:
"Now let's discuss the goals of this course.
One of the main goals of Understanding the Self is to connect your personal experiences with the
academic concepts that we will discuss in class.
In other words, we are not just learning theories. We will relate these theories to our own lives and
experiences.
This course also encourages critical thinking and reflective learning. Reflection means taking time to
examine our thoughts, behaviors, decisions, and experiences so that we can learn from them.
Another goal is to help you improve your self-knowledge and self-awareness. Specifically, we will
explore:
Your capabilities
Your character
Your feelings
Your motivations
By understanding these aspects of yourself, you become more aware of your strengths and areas that
need improvement.
The course also promotes personal growth and self-development. It supports success not only in your
academic journey but also in your future career and personal life.
Ultimately, this course aims to help you achieve a better quality of life by becoming more self-aware
and intentional in your actions.
Remember, before we can understand others, we must first understand ourselves."
Question to Students:
"What is one thing about yourself that you would like to understand better this semester?"
AN OVERVIEW OF SELF/IDENTITY SCRIPT
Instructor:
"Let us now begin our first lesson: An Overview of Self and Identity.
When we hear the word self, we often think of our name, appearance, or personality. However, the
self is much more complex than that.
According to psychologists, the self consists of many aspects, including:
Self-awareness
Self-esteem
Self-knowledge
Self-perception
Let us briefly discuss each one.
Self-awareness refers to recognizing your own thoughts, emotions, strengths, and weaknesses.
For example, if you know that you become nervous when speaking in front of many people, that is
self-awareness.
Self-esteem refers to how you value yourself. It is how much confidence and respect you have for
who you are.
Self-knowledge is your understanding of your personality, abilities, values, and beliefs.
Self-perception is how you see yourself and how you interpret your own characteristics.
Together, these aspects shape our identity and influence how we interact with others."
Why is Understanding the Self Important?
Instructor:
"Understanding oneself is important because it affects almost every aspect of our lives.
It influences our decisions, relationships, academic performance, career choices, and personal
growth.
For example:
If you understand your strengths, you can choose a career that matches your abilities.
If you understand your weaknesses, you can work on improving them.
If you understand your emotions, you can manage stress more effectively.
Personal identity also influences our actions and continues to develop throughout our lives. We are
not exactly the same person today as we were five years ago, and we will continue to grow and
change in the future. "
Self-Concept and Self-Esteem
Instructor:
"Before we end today's lesson, let us focus on two important concepts:
Self-Concept and Self-Esteem.
Self-concept is the image or picture that you have of yourself.
For example:
'I am hardworking.'
'I am creative.'
'I am shy.'
These statements form part of your self-concept.
On the other hand, self-esteem refers to how you feel about that image.
You may know that you are shy, but do you accept it positively or negatively?
That feeling reflects your self-esteem.
A healthy self-esteem helps us face challenges confidently and maintain positive relationships with
others."
Reflection Question
Instructor:
"Before we end our discussion, I want you to reflect on this question:
'Who am I beyond my name, age, course, and achievements?'
Take a moment to think about it.
This simple question will guide many of our discussions throughout the semester because
Understanding the Self begins with honestly examining who we are and who we aspire to become."
"Would anyone like to share their thoughts?"
