CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

Electricity is one of the most essential resources in the modern world, powering homes,

industries, schools, and offices. Almost every aspect of daily life now depends on

electrical energy, from lighting and refrigeration to communication and entertainment. As

the number of electrical and electronic appliances in use continues to grow, the need for

safe and flexible power distribution systems has equally increased.

One of the simplest devices that help to meet this demand is the electrical extension box.

An extension box, also called a power strip or extension socket, allows several appliances

to be powered from a single outlet. Over time, the design of extension boxes has evolved

beyond providing extra outlets; many now incorporate switches, fuses, circuit breakers,

and even surge protection features to improve safety and performance (Chen & Wu,

2018). In countries like Nigeria, where most buildings have only a limited number of

sockets installed, extension boxes have become an everyday necessity in homes, offices,

laboratories, and workshops (Okoro & Bello, 2021).

For students of electrical and electronic engineering, constructing an extension box

provides a valuable opportunity to apply theoretical knowledge in a practical way. The

process reinforces skills in wiring, load estimation, safety considerations, and project

management. It also demonstrates how basic materials can be used to create useful

devices that meet community needs (Ahmed et al., 2020).

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Many households and workplaces suffer from an inadequate number of power outlets to

meet the increasing demand created by modern appliances. To overcome this shortage,

people often rely on unsafe practices such as connecting multiple devices through low-

quality adapters or poorly made extension cords. These practices frequently result in

overheating, fire outbreaks, electrocution, and premature damage to electrical appliances

(Ogunleye, 2022).

There is, therefore, a need to construct an extension box that is reliable, affordable, and

capable of meeting power distribution needs while also conforming to recognized safety

standards.

1.3 Aim and Objectives of the Study

The aim of this project is to design and construct an electrical extension box that is safe,

durable, and efficient for powering multiple appliances simultaneously. To achieve this,

the study seeks to examine the design principles of extension systems, select suitable

materials and tools for construction, build the device with multiple outlets and switches,

and finally test it under load to confirm its reliability. It also intends to ensure that the

constructed extension box complies with standard safety requirements while remaining

affordable and adaptable for everyday use.

1.4 Significance of the Study

The study is important for several reasons. First, it addresses a common challenge in

homes and offices where the number of available sockets is insufficient for daily needs.

By providing a cost-effective and safe solution, the project reduces the risks associated

with unsafe electrical connections. Secondly, the work offers students practical
experience that bridges the gap between theoretical studies and real-life application.

Finally, the project demonstrates how locally sourced materials can be used to fabricate

devices that are both useful and reliable. In the long run, innovations like this could

inspire the development of more advanced designs such as smart extension boxes

integrated with Internet-of-Things (IoT) technologies (Kumar & Singh, 2023).

1.5 Scope of the Study

This project focuses on the design, construction, and testing of an electrical extension box

suitable for domestic and office use. The device will consist of multiple socket outlets,

each controlled by an individual switch. The extension box is designed to support

appliances drawing up to 13A per outlet. Advanced features such as surge protection or

wireless controls are beyond the current scope, though they may form the basis for future

improvements.

1.6 Justification of the Study

The justification for this study lies in the need for safe, reliable, and locally produced

power distribution devices. Many of the extension cords found in local markets are of

poor quality and fail to meet international safety standards, thereby posing risks of

electrocution and fire hazards. Constructing an extension box using standard materials

not only provides a safer alternative but also demonstrates how small-scale local

production can reduce dependence on imported goods. This project can therefore

contribute to improving safety awareness and encouraging innovation among students

and small-scale fabricators (Eze & Johnson, 2017).
