Tutorial Questions - Magnetism

The document is a tutorial sheet on magnetism, containing three questions related to magnetic field calculations. It includes calculations for magnetic field strength, flux density, total flux, force on a conductor, and ampere turns for magnetizing an iron ring with an air gap. The tutorial provides specific parameters such as coil turns, current, and material properties for solving the problems.

Figure Q1: A coil of 200 turns is wound uniformly onto a wooden ring

Q1: A coil of 200 turns is wound uniformly onto a wooden ring having a mean circumference of 0.6 m and a
uniform cross sectional area of 500 x 10-6 m2 and. If the current through the coil is 4 amps and = 4 x 10-7,
calculate:

a. Magnetic field strength

b. Flux Density
c. The total flux

Q2: A conductor carries a current of 800 A at right angles to a magnetic flux having a density of 0.5 Wb/m2.
Calculate the force on the conductor in Newtons per metre length.

Figure Q3: An iron ring with an air gap

Q3: An iron ring of cross sectional area 30 x 10 -4 m2 and mean diameter of 0.25 m has a slot 1 mm wide which
forms an air gap in the ring. A coil of 300 turns is wound on the ring and a flux density of 1 Tesla is required in the
air gap. Noting that = 4 x 10-7 and the magnetic field strength for iron = 4,000 AT/m, calculate the following:

a. Ampere turns to magnetise the air gap.

b. Ampere turns to magnetise the iron.
c. Current required in the coil to magnetise the ring.
d. Inductance of the coil/iron circuit.
