Introduction

1. Purpose

The purpose of this report is to perform the protection co-ordination study to provide the functional settings
of the protection relays necessary for the operation of the protection system for Western Coal Field Limited
Nagpur, which is one of the leading coal mining company responsible for supplying coal to industries in Central
India, Maharashtra. Based on the provided inputs the setting values are proposed.

2. Power system description

Western Coal Field Limited Nagpur is executing the expansion of 33/3.3kV Substation at Saoner Nagpur Area in
Maharashtra. 33KV line Supply from the remote end which is stepped down to 3.3kV through Two numbers of

7 Major technical parameters
The following inputs are taken in this study,
7.1 Grid parameters
The following grid parameters are considered in this study,

S. No Description Voltage Frequency X/R kASC

1 Three phase fault 33 kV 50 Hz 14 20 kA

2 Single phase fault 33 kV 50 Hz 14 20 kA

(Note: Source fault current is assumed to be 80% of the bus fault level capacity of the 33 kV switchgear)

8 Protection philosophy
8.1 Co-ordination settings & criteria

There are two basic adjustable settings on all inverse time relays; one is the current setting usually known as
the Plug Setting Multiplier (PSM) and the other is Time Multiplier Setting (TMS).

Primary current Primary current

PSM = =
primary setting current relay current setting x CT Ratio

Primary current
=
primary operating current

Where, Top
TMS =
Top = the required time of operation Tm
Tm = the time operation at TMS = 1.0 for maximum fault current

8.2 Basis of coordination for protection settings

(a) Fault clearance times shall be estimated as relay time plus switching device opening time.

(b) The grading time comprises recommended as per IEEE standard.

8.3 Relay coordination guidelines

Following coordination philosophy is used for relay coordination:

a) Time discrimination is decided based on circuit breaker opening time, relay overtravel and relay tolerance-
setting errors. Time discrimination is taken as 200 msec and 120 msec respectively for relay-to-relay and Trip
unit/release to relay. As per IEEE-242-2001 guideline recommended values are 300 msec and 200 msec
respectively for electromechanical relays and static relays.

b) And time discrimination is taken as 5 msec to 150 msec for MCCB to MCCB and ACB to MCCB. As per IEEE-
242-2001 guideline recommended values are clear space is sufficient b/w the two load side, supply side MCCB
for MCCB with TMD, Electronic releases [IEEE-242-2001, Table-15-3, pp-605].

ICE-DP-26078-RSC-002 Page 7 of 35
Rev-0
c) In normal operating condition the B/C breaker remains open and both I/C breaker remain closed. The same
settings of relays shall ensure the better selectivity (Time discrimination) for upstream relays. However for bus
sectionalizers time-coordination is done, by giving time discrimination with the incomer relay.

9 Task methodology

1. The manual calculation of all protection functions are done as per the feeder requirement using MS Excel.

2. ETAP SLD modelling is done by the received inputs.

3. Overcurrent and earth fault protection coordination is carried out using ETAP tool.

10.2.02 Transformer differential protections
In applying the principles of differential protection to transformers, a variety of considerartion have to be taken
in to account. These includes,

1. Correction of possible phase shift across the transformer winding (phase correction)
2. The effects of the variety of earthing and winding arrangements (filtering of zero sequence currents)
3. Correction for possible unbalance of signals from CTs on either side of the windings (ratio correction)
4. The effect of magnetising inrush during initial energisation.
5. The possible occurrence of overfluxing

Calculation of ratio correction & compensation factor

The CT secondary currents often differ from the rated current at the rated load of the power transformer. The CT
transforming ratios can be corrected on both sides of the power transformer with the CT ratio Cor Wnd 1 and CT
ration Cor Wnd 2 settings.
Calculation of averge adjustment factor = 2/((1/(kVmin)+(1/(kVmax))
= 2/((1/30.9375)+(1/35.0625))

Calculation of Differential current and Restrainning current at -5% tap,

Differential current at -5% tap, = |1.07-1|

Restrainning current at -5% tap, = (|1.07|+|1|)/(2)
I rest at -5% tap = 1.04 A

Low operate value:

The basic setting defines the pick-up setting of the differential protection for internal faults. The lowest possible
value should be chosen to enable it to detect the worst- case faults. However, there can be small differential
current during normal operation, which may result in tripping.

By considering additional safety margin, The = 0.2 times of rated current

value for Low operate value is set to = 20 % of Ir
SlopeSection2: In order to cope with false differential currents proportional to higher than normal currents
through the current transformers, a minor slope section is introduced.

Slope section can be calculated at +5% tap, = Idiff/I rest

= 27.00 %
Slope section2 = 30 % (As per industrial practice)

The second turning point End section 2 can be set in the range of 100 percent to 500 percent.
End section2 = 150 % of Ir (As per industrial practice)

Vector group matching and elimination of the zero-sequence component

The vector group of the power transformer is numerically matched on the high voltage and low voltage sides by
means of the Winding 1 type, Winding 2 type and Clock number settings.

Vector group of the transformer = Dyn11

Winding 1 type = D
Winding 2 type = yn
Clock number = Clk Num 11
Zro A Elimination = Not needed
Winding 1 type = 3=D
Winding 2 type = 2=yn

High operate value

The task of this protection stage is the fast capture of high-current internal faults. For this reason, the protection
stage must always be activated.
