Course Project for EE 430
Project Description:
In this project, you will work in groups of up to five students to explore the state-space representation
and transfer function of a dynamical system using MATLAB. You will analyze system behavior,
evaluate stability, and visualize results.
Learning Objectives:
By the end of this project, you should be able to:
1. Understand the relationship between state-space models and transfer functions for dynamical
systems.
2. Use MATLAB to simulate and analyze transient response, steady-state error, and stability.
3. Apply classical analysis tools, including Root Hurwitz/Array, Root Locus, and Bode plots.
4. Visually present and clearly interpret simulation and analysis results.
Instructions:
1. Select a Dynamical System
o Identify a dynamical system and obtain its transfer function (at least 3rd order
systems) and state-space model.
o If only one representation is available, derive the other using methods covered in
class.
o Perform simulations of the transfer function.
o Compute the eigenvalues and determine whether the system is stable.
2. Simulate the System in MATLAB
o Run simulations without control input.
o Apply standard inputs and analyze the response: Unit step, Ramp, and Parabolic
input
3. Visualize the Results
o Create clear and informative plots, such as: Time-response plots, Scatter plots, 3D
plots, Contour plots (select at least one)
4. Interpret the Results
o Explain what the simulations and plots reveal about: System behavior, Stability,
Transient and steady-state performance
Deliverables:
1. MATLAB code with detailed comments.
2. A report including:
o Description of the chosen dynamical model
o All relevant plots and visualizations
o Interpretation and discussion of the results.
Grading Rubric:
• 20%: Clear explanation of the dynamical model.
• 35%: Correct implementation of MATLAB code with appropriate comments.
• 25%: Quality of visualizations and plots.
• 20%: Interpretation of results and insights.
