Key Definitions (English to English)
Term Meaning
Decimal Place The number of digits shown after the
decimal point.
Rounding to Decimal Places Adjusting a number to show a fixed
number of digits after the decimal point.
Significant Figure (s.f.) A digit that gives meaningful information
about the number’s size.
Rounding to 1 s.f. Keeping only the first significant digit and
adjusting the rest.
Rounding Rules:
1. Look at the digit immediately after the place you are rounding to.
2. If the digit is 5 or more, round up.
3. If the digit is less than 5, round down.
4. For significant figures, start counting from the first non-zero digit.
Worked Examples
Rounding to Decimal Places:
• Round 3.146 to 2 decimal places (2 d.p.): Look at the third digit after the decimal: 6 →
Round up → Answer: 3.15
• Round 7.8239 to 1 decimal place (1 d.p.): Look at the second digit after the decimal: 2
→ No change → Answer: 7.8
Rounding to 1 Significant Figure (s.f.):
• Round 38.6 to 1 s.f.: First significant digit is 3, next is 8 → Round up → Answer: 40
• Round 0.0468 to 1 s.f.: First significant digit is 4, next is 6 → Round up → Answer: 0.05
• Round 8052 to 1 s.f.: First significant digit is 8, next is 0 → No change → Answer: 8000
