NAME OF LEARNER : DALE A TAPEMHERA
LEARNING AREA. MATHEMATICS
LEVEL. : O LEVEL
TOPIC. : IMPROVEMENT OF DUSTY CONDITIONS
SYLLABUS TOPIC. : MENSTRUATION
OBJECTIVES. :
- To improve classroom hygiene by reducing dust from cement floors.
- To provide a clean and comfortable learning environment for students.
- To enhance the appearance and durability of classroom floors.
- To reduce maintenance and cleaning efforts required for the floors.
PROJECT EXECUTION : I will commence the project on February up until end of June
STAGE 1 : PROBLEM IDENTIFICATION
1. PROBLEM
At our school, many classrooms have bare cement floors which produce a lot of dust. This dust
affects students’ health, causes discomfort during learning, and makes the classroom
environment unclean.
2. PROBLEM DESCRIPTION
The dusty floors contribute to respiratory issues such as coughing, sneezing, and allergies
among learners. The dust also settles on books, desks, and uniforms, making it hard to
maintain cleanliness and a focused learning environment.
3. STATEMENT OF INTENT
This project aims to reduce or eliminate dust in the classroom by creating a quotation for the
school administration to use when purchasing ceramic tiles for flooring classroom
4. MAIN IDEA
The main idea is to create a clean, dust-free learning environment through affordable and
sustainable flooring improvements.
5. DESIGN SPECIFICATIONS
The solution must:
- Reduce or eliminate dust
- Be durable and safe for learners
- Be easy to maintain and clean
- Be cost-effective for the school
- Improve the classroom appearance
STAGE 2 : INVESTIGATION OF RELATED IDEAS
*1. I visited DRAKE HIGH SCHOOL :
They used *cement flooring with regular painting*.
- *Advantage:* Cheaper
- *Disadvantage:* Dust returns when paint fades
*2. I visited RUTENDO HIGH SCHOOL
They used *PVC vinyl sheets*.
- *Advantage:* Cleaner than cement
- *Disadvantage:* Wears out quickly with heavy use
*3. I visited KWEKWE HIGH SCHOOL
They used *ceramic tiles*.
- *Advantage:* Long-lasting, easy to clean
- *Disadvantage:* Higher initial cost
*4. Internet Research:*
: Showed that *porcelain tiles* are more durable in high-use areas.
*Recommendation:*
Ceramic or porcelain tiles are the best option due to durability and effectiveness.
---
STAGE 3 : GENERATION OF IDEAS
*Idea 1: Use of ceramic tiles*
- *How it works:* Lay ceramic tiles across the classroom floor using cement and grout.
- *Strength:* Durable, low maintenance, easy to clean
- *Weakness:* Expensive to install
*Idea 2: Polished concrete flooring*
- *How it works:* Sand the existing concrete and polish it to reduce dust.
- *Strength:* Affordable and smoother than raw concrete
- *Weakness:* Still prone to some dust over time
*Idea 3: Rubber floor mats*
- *How it works:* Place large rubber mats to reduce direct contact with dust
- *Strength:* Temporary, affordable
- *Weakness:* Can move out of place, not a permanent fix
*Idea 4: PVC tiles*
- *How it works:* Install PVC tiles as a cheaper alternative
- *Strength:* Easy to fix and clean
- *Weakness:* Not as long-lasting
*Idea 5: Wooden floorboards*
- *How it works:* Nail wooden boards across the floor
- *Strength:* Traditional and reduces dust
- *Weakness:* Can rot or be eaten by termites
SELECTED IDEA
*Ceramic tile flooring* due to its long-term benefits
---
STAGE 4 : DEVELOPMENT OF IDEAS
*Chosen Idea:* Ceramic Tile Installation
*Refinement:*
- Plan budget with local suppliers
- Use slip-resistant tiles for safety
- Hire skilled labor for proper installation
*Synthesis:*
Combined ideas from schools and online research to select a practical solution for our
classroom.
*Prototype/Demo:*
Small area near the blackboard was tiled first to test cleaning ease and durability.
---
*Stage 5: Presentation of Results*
*Final Solution:*
A tiled classroom floor using ceramic tiles.
*Presentation:*
- A3 drawing of classroom before and after tiling
- Photographs of demo tiled area
- Written report including budget and labor details
- Oral explanation to class and teachers
CALCULATIONS
The number of 400mm × 400mm tiles needed for a *12 m × 6 m* classroom.
*Step 1: Convert tile size to meters*
400 mm = 0.4 meters, so each tile is 0.4 m × 0.4 m
Area of one tile = 0.4 × 0.4 = 0.16 m²
STEP 2 : Calculations of the classroom area
12 m × 6 m = 72m²
STEP 3 : Number of tiles needed
Formulae = classroom area ÷area of the tile
72 ÷ 0.16 = 450 tiles
The number of classes that need tiling are 8,therefore I'm going to use ratio to calculate number
of tiles needed for 8 classes
1 classroom =450 tile
8 classroom = ? More
8 × 450tiles
= 3600 tiles
✅ Final Answer:
You need approximately 450 tiles for one classroom of 12 m × 6 m using 400 mm × 400 mm
tiles.
Number of tiles needed for the classroom = 3600 tiles
Calculation of the total cost based on:
3 600 tiles needed
- *1 box = 12 tiles*
- *1 box costs = 13.50*
*Step 1: Number of boxes needed*
3 600 ÷ 12 = 300 boxes
*Step 2: Total cost*
300 boxes ×13.50 = $4 050
✅ FINAL ANSWER:
You will need 300 boxes, and the total cost will be $4 050, 00
STAGE 6 : EVALUATION AND RECOMMENDATIONS
EVALUATION
Evaluation
-Clean, dust-free classroom
Challenges:
- Initial cost and labor
- *Success:* Met design specifications (clean, durable, safe)
*Recommendations:*
- Extend tiling to all classrooms
- Use fundraising or request donations for more tiles
- Combine with routine cleaning and maintenance
