• Through philosophy, we are able to explore concepts like the meaning of life,
knowledge, reality, religion, economics, art, linguistics, etc.

Components of Self-Concept
1-Self identity
-A sense of personal identity is what sets one person apart as a unique
individual.
-Identity includes a person’s name, gender, ethnic identity, family
status, occupation, and roles.
-One’s personal identity begins to develop during childhood and is
constantly reinforced and modified throughout life.

2-Body image
-Body image is an attitude about one’s physical attributes and
characteristics, appearance, and performance.
-Body image is dynamic because any change in body structure or
function, including the normal changes of growth and development,
can affect it.

3-Self-esteem
-Self-esteem is the judgment of personal performance compared with
the self-ideal.
-Self-esteem is derived from a sense of giving and receiving love, and
being respected by others.

4-Role performance
-Role refers to a set of expected behaviors determined by familial,
cultural, and social norms.
-The level of self-esteem is dependent upon the self-perception of
adequate role performance in these various social roles.

WHAT IS THE BODY IMAGE?
Body image is the perception that a person has of their physical
self and the thoughts and feelings that result from that
perception. These feelings can be positive, negative or both and
are influenced by individual and environmental factors.

• -How you view your physical self
• -How you feel about how you look
• -How you feel others view your physical appearance
• -How you feel about the attractiveness of your body
• Are toys like Barbie and action figures realistic? What
ideas do they give as about our bodies?

Poor body image and self-esteem are linked with
various mental health and other health conditions
like depression, unhealthy dieting, eating disorders,
self-harm, and substance abuse. Body image and
self-esteem directly influence each other and
people’s feelings, thoughts, and actions.

more complex and intricate than just the genitals.
