Tutorial Test 2

This document is a tutorial test for the CH1002E Material and Energy Balance course at the National Institute of Technology Calicut. It includes three problems related to the mass ratio of compounds, distillation column separation, and solvent recovery with recycle. The test is scheduled for one hour and has a maximum score of 20 marks.

1 A mixture of CuSO4.5H2O and FeSO4.7H2O weighs 100 g. It is heated in an oven 4

to evaporate the water of hydration. The mass of mixture after removal of water is
59.78 g. Calculate the mass ratio of CuSO4 to FeSO4 in the mixture.
[Data: Atomic mass of Fe and Cu are 56 and 64]

2 In a distillation column, an equimolar mixture of ethanol, propanol, and butanol is 6

separated into an overhead stream containing 66⅔% ethanol and no butanol and a
bottom stream containing no ethanol. Calculate the overhead and bottoms streams
and compositions for a feed rate of 100 mol/h.

3 A purification system with recycle is used to recover the solvent DMF from a waste 10
gas containing 55% DMF in air. The product is to have only 10% DMF. Calculate
the recycle fraction assuming that the purification unit can remove two thirds of
the DMF in the combined feed to the unit.
