Rectangle

A rectangle is a quadrilateral with opposite sides that are equal in length and all
four angles measuring 90 degrees. The diagonals of a rectangle are equal in
length but not necessarily equal to the sides.

Perimeter of a Rectangle
Formula:

𝑃 = 2 × (𝐿𝑒𝑛𝑔𝑡ℎ + 𝐵𝑟𝑒𝑎𝑑𝑡ℎ) = 2(𝑙 + 𝑏)

Where P is the perimeter, Length is denoted as l, and Breadth as b.

Area of a Rectangle
Formula:

𝐴𝑟𝑒𝑎 = 𝐿𝑒𝑛𝑔𝑡ℎ × 𝐵𝑟𝑒𝑎𝑑𝑡ℎ = 𝑙 × 𝑏

Diagonal of a Rectangle
Formula:

2 2 2
𝑑 = 𝑙 +𝑏

2 2
𝑑 = 𝑙 + 𝑏

Where d is the length of the diagonal.

Example 1: Find the perimeter of a 30 m long and 20 m wide rectangular
region?

Solution:

Given:

Length of rectangular region = 30 m

Width of rectangular region = 20 m

Formula used:

Perimeter = 2 × (Length + Breadth)

Calculation:

Perimeter = 2 × (30 + 20) m

⇒ 2 × 50 m

⇒ 100 m

∴ The correct answer is 100 m.

Example 2: Find the area of a playground of 300 m length and 200 m

breadth.

Solution:

Given:

Length (L) = 300 m

Breadth (B) = 200 m

Concept used:

Area of a rectangle = Length × Breadth

Calculation:

Area of a rectangle = Length × Breadth

= 300 m × 200 m

= 60000 m2

∴ The correct answer is 60,000 m2.

Example 3: The length and breadth of a rectangle are 12 cm and 8 cm
respectively. If the length of the rectangle is halved then the new breadth of
the rectangle having the same area is:

Solution:

Given:

Initial length = 12 cm and final length = 12/2 = 6 cm

Initial breadth = 8 cm

Calculation:

Let the final breadth be x

Initial area = 8 × 12

Final area = 6 × x

New breadth = 12 × 8/6 = 16 cm

∴ The correct answer is 16 cm.

Example 4: The side of a square tile is 12 cm. How many tiles should be
required for a wall of 8 meters and 4.5 meters height?

Solution:

Given:

Length of the wall = 8 m = 8 x 100 = 800 cm

Height of the wall = 4.5 m= 4.5 x 100 = 450 cm

Formula used:

Area of a square(tiles) = side2

Area of (rectangle) = length × breadth

Required number of tiles = Area of wall/Area of a tile

Calculation:

Required number of tiles = (800 × 450)/(12 x 12) = 2500

∴ The correct answer is 2500.

Example 5: A rectangular park 50 m long and 40 m wide is surrounded by 5
m wide continuous concrete road. The area of the road is

Solution:

Given:

Length of the park = 50 meters

Breadth of the park = 40 meters

Width of the road = 5 meters

Formula used:

Area of Rectangle = Length × Breadth

Calculation:

Area of road = area of ABCD - Area of EFGH

⇒ AB = 50 + 5 + 5 = 60 m

⇒ AD = 40 + 5 + 5 = 50 m

⇒ Area of road = 60 × 50 - 50 × 40

⇒ Area of road = 3000 - 2000

⇒ Area of road = 1000 m2

∴ The correct answer is 1000 m2.

Example 6: Simon has a rectangular pond of length 210 m and width 165 m.
He wants to fence it with 2 rounds of rope at the rate of Rs. 10 per meter.
Find the cost of fencing.

Solution:

Given:

Length of rectangular pond = 210 m

Width of rectangular pond = 165 m

Fence a rope of 2 round at the rate Rs 10 per meter

Concept used:

Perimeter of rectangle = 2(l + b)

Calculation:

Length of rectangular pond = 210 m

Width of rectangular pond = 165 m

Length of rope used in 1 round = Perimeter of rectangle = 2(l + b)

= 2(210 + 165) = 750m

Length of rope used in 2 round = 750 × 2 = 1500 m

Rate to fence the rope per meter = Rs10

Total cost of fencing = 1500 × 10 = Rs 15000

∴ The correct answer is Rs 15000.

Example 7: In the given figure, ABCD is a rectangle with AD = 4 units and

AE = EB. EF is perpendicular to DB and is half of DF. If the area of the
triangle DEF is 5 sq. units, then what is the area of ABCD?
Solution:

Let EF = x units. Then, DF = 2x units

(1/2)EF × DF = 5

(1/2) × x × 2x = 5

x2 = 5

x = √5

2 2 2 2
DE = 𝐷𝐹 + 𝐸𝐹 = (2 5) + ( 5) = √25 = 5 units

2 2 2 2
𝐷𝐸 − 𝐴𝐷 = 5 − 4 = √9 = 3 units

AB = 2AE = 6 units

Area of rectangle = AB × AD

= 6 × 4 = 24 sq. units.

∴ The correct answer is 24 sq. units.
