LIGHT – REFLECTION AND REFRACTION
I. ANSWER THE FOLLOWING NUMERICALS:
1. A 10 mm long awl pin is placed vertically in front of a concave mirror. A 5 mm long image
of the awl pin is formed at 30 cm in front of the mirror. The focal length of this mirror is
(a) -30 cm (b) -20 cm (c) -40 cm (d) -60 cm
2. Rohit placed a pencil perpendicular to principal axis in front of a converging mirror of
focal length 30 cm. The image formed is twice the size of the pencil. Calculate the distance of
the object from the mirror.
3. A convex lens has a focal length of 10 cm. At what distance from the lens should the object
be placed so that it forms a real and inverted image 20 cm away from the lens? What would
be the size of the image formed if the object is 2 cm high? With the help of a ray diagram
show the formation of the image by the lens in this case?
4. A convex lens forms a real and inverted image of a needle at distance of 50 cm from it.
Where is the needle placed in front of the convex lens if the image is equal to the size of
objects? Also, find the power of lens.
5. A convex lens of focal length 15 cm formed an image 10 cm from the lens. How far is the
object placed from the lens? Draw the ray diagram.
6. Refractive index of water with respect to air is 1.33, what is refractive index of air with
respect to water?
7. Light travels from rarer medium 1 to denser medium 2. Angle of incidence & refraction
are 45° & 30° respectively.
(i) Calculate the refractive index of second medium with respect to the first.
(ii) Calculate the refractive index of the first medium with respect to the second.
8. A concave mirror has a focal length of 20 cm. At what distance from the mirror should a 4
cm tall object be placed so that it forms an image at a distance of 30 cm from the mirror?
Also calculate the size of the image formed.
9. The image of a candle flame placed at a distance of 30 cm from a mirror is formed on a
screen placed in front of the mirror at a distance of 60 cm from its pole. What is the nature
of the mirror? Find its focal length. If the height of the flame is 2.4 cm, find the height of its
image. State whether the image formed is erect or inverted.
10. An object 4 cm in height, is placed at 15 cm in front of a concave mirror of focal length
10 cm. At what distance from the mirror should a screen be placed to obtain a sharp image
of the object. Calculate the height of the image.
11. The image of an object formed by a mirror is real, inverted and is of magnification -1. If
the image is at a distance of 40 cm from the mirror, where is the object placed? Where
would the image be if the object is moved 20 cm towards the mirror? State reason and also
draw ray diagram for the new position of the object to justify your answer.
12. Calculate the magnification of the image of an object placed perpendicular to the
principal axis of a concave mirror of focal length 15 cm. The object is at a distance of 20 cm
from the mirror.
13. A security mirror used in a big showroom has radius of curvature 5 m. If a customer is
standing at a distance of 20 m from the cash counter, find the position, nature and size of
the image formed in the security mirror.
14. Draw a diagram and apply these conventions for calculating the focal length and nature
of a spherical mirror which forms a 1/3 times magnified virtual image of an object placed
18 cm in front of it.
15. The refractive indices of glass and water with respect to air are 3/2 and 4/3
respectively. If speed of light in glass is 2 × 10⁸ m/s, find the speed of light in water.
16. A real image 2/3rd of the size of an object is formed by a convex lens when the object is
at a distance of 12 cm from it. Find the focal length of the lens.
17. A student uses a lens of focal length 40 cm and another of -20 cm. Write the nature and
power of each lens.
18. If the speed of light in vacuum is 3 × 10⁸ m/s, find the absolute refractive index of a
medium in which light travels with a speed of 1.4 × 10⁸ m/s.
19. An object of height 6 cm is placed perpendicular to the principal axis of a concave lens of
focal length 5 cm. Use lens formula to determine the position, size and nature of the image if
the distance of the object from the lens is 10 cm.
20. Find the power of a convex lens which forms a real and inverted image of magnification
-1 of an object placed at a distance of 20 cm from its optical centre.
