Science Project

The document outlines two science projects: a mini volcanic eruption using baking soda and vinegar, and a water purification model using basic filtration techniques. The volcanic eruption project demonstrates a chemical reaction that produces carbon dioxide gas, while the water purification project mimics natural filtration processes to clean dirty water. Both projects include objectives, required materials, step-by-step construction instructions, and explanations of the underlying scientific principles.

Science project

project 1: mini volcanic eruption

🎯 objective
to demonStrate a volcanic eruption uSing a Simple chemical
reaction between baking Soda and vinegar.

🧪 Materials Required
• Empty plastic bottle or cup
• Baking soda (sodium bicarbonate)
• Vinegar (acetic acid)
• Dish soap (optional for frothy lava)
• Red/orange food coloring (for lava effect)
• Tray or cardboard base
• Clay, dough, or paper mache (to shape the volcano)
• Funnel or spoon

🛠️ Step-by-Step conStruction
1. build the volcano Structure

• place the bottle or cup in the center of a tray.

• uSe clay, dough, or paper mache to Shape a cone around it,
leaving the top open.
• let it dry if needed.

2. prepare the lava mixture

• add 2–3 tableSpoonS of baking Soda into the bottle.

• mix vinegar with a few dropS of diSh Soap and food coloring
in a Separate container.

3. trigger the eruption

• pour the vinegar mixture into the bottle.

• watch the bubbly, colorful lava erupt and flow down the
volcano!
learning outcome:
• baking Soda iS a baSe, and vinegar iS an acid.
• when combined, they react to form carbon dioxide gaS,
which cauSeS bubbling and foaming—juSt like a volcanic
eruption!

project 2: water purification working model
objective
to demonStrate how dirty water can be cleaned
uSing baSic filtration techniqueS, mimicking natural
and houSehold water purification proceSSeS.

materialS required
• 1 plaStic bottle (cut in half)
• cotton ballS or cloth
• activated charcoal
• fine Sand
• gravel (Small and large)
• dirty water (mix of water, Soil, and Small debriS)
• paper cupS (optional for layering)
• collection container

Step-by-Step conStruction
1. prepare the filter baSe
cut a plaStic bottle in half. uSe the top half aS the filter
funnel and invert it into the bottom half.

2. layer the filtering materialS

add layerS from bottom to top:
cotton ballS – trapS fine particleS
activated charcoal – removeS odorS and chemicalS
fine Sand – filterS Smaller debriS
gravel – catcheS larger particleS
each layer playS a role in cleaning the water.

3. pour dirty water

Slowly pour dirty water into the top of the filter. watch aS
it paSSeS through each layer.
4. collect clean water
the filtered water will drip into the bottom
container. it may not be drinkable, but it will be
viSibly cleaner.

explanation of how it workS

• gravel removeS large debriS like leaveS or
StoneS.
• Sand filterS out Smaller particleS.
• charcoal abSorbS impuritieS and odorS.
• cotton actS aS the final fine filter.

thiS mimicS how natural filtration SyStemS and

houSehold purifierS work.
