INSURANCE PROJECT
Formation of LIC
Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) was established on 1 September 1956 by the Government of India.
Before the formation of LIC, many private insurance companies operated in India. To protect policyholders and
improve trust in the insurance sector, the government nationalized life insurance companies and merged around
245 insurance companies and provident societies into one organization called LIC. The main objective of LIC was
to spread life insurance among people in both urban and rural areas. LIC also encouraged savings and provided
financial security to families. Over time, LIC became one of the largest and most trusted insurance institutions in
India.
