Guidelines for Writing Answers & Scoring High Marks

1. Presentation of the Answer Script.

• Write neatly and legibly.
• Use a blue pen throughout the examination.
• Leave proper margins.
• Number all questions correctly according to the question paper.
• Attempt questions in the same order whenever possible.
• Draw graphs and diagrams with a pencil and label them properly.
• Avoid overwriting and unnecessary rough work on the main answer sheet.

2. Understanding the ISC Mathematics Marking Scheme.

In Mathematics, marks are generally awarded for:
1. Correct Formula/Concept (1 mark)
2. Correct Substitution (1 mark)
3. Proper Calculation Steps (1–2 marks)
4. Final Correct Answer (1 mark)

Important: Even if the final answer is wrong due to a calculation error, you may receive step marks
if the method is correct.

3. How to Represent Answers for different chapters.

Algebra
• Write the given data first.
• Mention the formula used.
• Show all intermediate steps.
• Box the final answer.

Calculus
• State the formula/rule (Product Rule, Quotient Rule, Chain Rule, etc.).
• Write each differentiation/integration step clearly.
• Include the constant of integration (+ C) where required.

Matrices and Determinants

• Write matrices neatly in proper format.
• Show determinant expansion clearly.
• Mention row/column operations used.
Probability
• Define events clearly.
• Write the probability formula.
• Substitute values systematically.

Vectors and 3D Geometry

• Use vector notation correctly.
• Mention formulas before applying them.
• Write direction ratios and direction cosines carefully.

4. Key Points to Score 90+ Marks.

Before the Exam
• Learn all formulas thoroughly.
• Practice previous 10 years' ISC papers.
• Solve specimen papers within the time limit.
• Maintain a formula notebook for revision.

During the Exam

• Read the entire paper first.
• Attempt easy questions first.
• Do not skip steps in long questions.
• Recheck calculations.
• Keep the last 15–20 minutes for revision.

5. Common Mistakes to Avoid.

Not writing formulas.

Skipping important steps.

Incorrect question numbering.

Arithmetic mistakes.

Missing units where applicable.

Forgetting "+ C" in indefinite integration.

Writing rough work mixed with the solution.

6. Examiner's Expectations.
An examiner prefers:
• Clear and systematic solutions.
• Proper mathematical notation.
• Logical flow of steps.
• Correct final answers highlighted or boxed.
• Clean and organized presentation.

Golden Rule.
Formula → Substitution → Calculation → Final Answer (Boxed)

Following this pattern consistently can significantly improve your score in ISC Class 12
Mathematics and help you secure 90–100 marks.
