Example (SPSS)
1. The following IQ scores were obtained from a random sample of university students.
85 91 93 99 100 107 111 115 90 92
a) Construct a 95% confidence interval for the population mean, μ. (91.203,
105.397)
b) Can we conclude that the mean I.Q. scores among the university students are
more than 95?
2. The following are the scores obtained in an IQ test by samples of nine urban boys and
ten rural boys. All the boys are of the same age.
Urban : 100 89 98 120 102 98 101 115 125
Rural : 112 100 78 56 120 89 99 113 118 86
Assume the data are taken from two normally distributed populations with equal
variances.
a) Construct a 99% confidence interval for the actual difference between the
average IQ scores of urban and rural boys. Ans.: (-14.19, 30.65) (8 marks)
b) Based on the results from part (a), can you conclude that urban boys are more
intelligent than rural boys?
3. A fitness club claims that its 12-week special exercise program significantly reduces
weight. A random sample of six individuals was selected and was put on this exercise
program for 12 weeks. The following table gives the weights (in pounds) before and
after the program. Assume that the population of all paired differences is
approximately normally distributed.
Individual 1 2 3 4 5 6
Before 180 195 177 221 208 199
After 183 187 161 204 197 189
Find a 90% confidence interval for the mean μd of the population paired differences
where d = Before – After (weight before joining the exercise program minus the
weight at the end of the 12-week program). Can we conclude that the exercise
program is effective? Justify your answer.
