REFLECTION PAPER
Throughout the process of creating our Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) focusing
on clean water and sanitation, I've gained valuable insights. The cleanliness of water, scarcity,
and proper sanitation issues have often been overlooked, and I've come to understand their
significance in health, the economy, and society. I've realized that many of us, including myself,
have been unaware of what has been happening in the world and the consequences of our
actions. Developing the SDG has not only made me more aware of my ignorance about crucial
issues affecting people's health but also sparked a personal journey of growth and realization.
The issues in Mindanao have become my eye-opener, showing me how my actions directly or
indirectly exacerbate these issues. It is an advocacy to let my fellow Filipinos experience my
experience – clean, safe, and improved water in every part of the Philippines, starting from
where I came from. Just because I enjoyed the benefit of something doesn't mean others did, too.
One of the three that resonates with me the most is the scarcity of water in Barangay
Labuyo of Tangub City, situated in the province of Misamis Oriental, due to the expanding
population of the barangay and the Marawi suffering from poor water quality because it did not
only arise health problem but the difficulty of families sustaining themselves. My hometown in
Hilongos, Leyte, experienced the same problem. I, too, witnessed how hard it was for the people
to cope with the lack of water and the contamination of water due to the rising population.
People in my hometown use manual water pumps that are a hundred years old, contaminating the
water with its rust, which is unsafe to drink. Fortunately, they developed a solution to this
problem by making new water pumps and wells for everyone as their water source, similar to
how the people in Tangub City and Marawi overcame and resolved this issue. The community
came together to fund and build new water pumps and wells, and local authorities provided
technical support. That experience made me realize there are similarities between different
places facing similar problems. Still, these are ignored and remain unheard, delaying the
development of appropriate measures to protect oneself until it is too late.
I came to realize that the good life is always aimed by everyone, doing everything they
can to achieve the life that they always wanted with moral virtues, enjoying various pleasures,
keeping check of certain objective conditions, having people as the reason for the sense of
fulfillment in life, and recognizing the actual nature of someone when they are gone. Although I
always aim for a good life, some specific actions of mine do not result in having a good life, like
eating unhealthy foods, having lazy habits, and sleeping late. A good life features the discipline
and consistency of doing something and fighting for the life you want, just like Mindanaoans,
who came up with a solution that would benefit everyone to achieve a good life. But always
remember, people experience first multiple challenges before acquiring a healthy, happy life and
grounding themselves with virtue.
