Creative writing with the theme of ‘The Outsider’.


Instructions:
1. write the beginning of a short story that explores the theme of being an "outsider." This could
explore what it feels like to be misunderstood or different from those around you..
2. Use the images as a stimulus to generate ideas.
3. Incorporate as many literary techniques as you can from the provided technique bank into
your writing.
4. Use at least 10 words from the vocabulary bank.
5. Highlight the techniques and vocabulary you’ve used by underlining them.

Theme: The Outsider

● Are you an outsider at school, at home or in an unfamiliar place, does your character see the
world differently?
● How does it feel? Is it positive or negative?
● How do characters or settings evolve?

Technique Bank

Metaphor/Simile – comparing one thing to another to show transformation.


Personification – giving human qualities to something non-human.
Juxtaposition – placing opposites side by side to highlight change.
Contrast – describing before and after moments.
Symbolism – using an object or image to represent change (e.g., seasons, doors, rivers).
Imagery – sensory description (sight, sound, smell, touch, taste).
Flashback/Flash-forward – showing time [Link] Sentence Lengths – to create pace and
[Link] fronted sentences- (words or a group of words that describe when, where, how, or
why something happens) is placed at the start of the sentence.

Paragraph: Plan

DROP your reader into the image:


Focus on sensory imagery and the
atmosphere/setting. Set the scene!

One sentence paragraph

ZOOM IN:
Focus on one area in detail.
Personify it and focus on using adjectives and
adverbs to describe it.

ZOOM OUT:
Pan across the whole image. Something
specific catches your eye. Remember to
continuously use adjectives and adverbs to
describe it - alongside your techniques.

SHIFT:
Switch your description by including a
flashback/forward or the idea of memory.
Include a window - ‘it reminded me of….’
(e.g - shift weather/perspective/mood)

One sentence paragraph

CLOSE:
Use a cyclical structure - directly link back to
the paragraph 1 repeat a phrase eg the
opening sentence. This can be copied directly
or include minor adaptations eg you open
with pathetic fallacy and end with pathetic
fallacy but the weather has changed at the
end.
