1.0 Console-734 Application Software

1.0 Introduction

This document provides guidance on the use and operation of "Console 734" software application
(Hereinafter referred to as the Program), which is a system for monitoring and managing technical means.

In order to operate the Program, the user must belong to one of the following groups and have the appropriate
qualifications:

– system administrator — an ATSEP whose duties include ensuring the regular operation of the
Program and the local network connecting technical means, as well as assigning roles and distributing
access rights to other users;
– Shift duty/Maintenance ATSEP — an employee who controls and manages technical means;
– ATCO — the end user receiving information from technical means.

Minimum system requirements:

– 2 GHz processor;
– 1 GB RAM;
– 16 GB of free hard disk space;
– Graphics adapter supporting 1024×800 pixels resolution;
– Free USB-port (serial port).

The PC must be running Microsoft Windows 10 Professional OS.

Before operating the Program it is necessary to study this manual.

2.0 Purpose

The Program is designed to manage, control and configure the equipment of a landing and navigation system
during diagnostics, as well as commissioning, maintenance and repairs of I L S 734;

The main tasks solved by the Program:

– receiving and displaying information about the equipment (Loc734 and GP734) status;
– Equipment operation management;
– Installation and configuration of equipment operation parameters;

– Administration of user access rights to the landing and navigation system functions;
– Logging of user activity.

3.0 Preparation

3.1.1 Launch

The Program can be launched with the shortcut "Console734" on the desktop or any other way (for example,
from the "Start" menu).

Before launching, the Program checks for its newer version in the directory which it was originally installed
from (see Figure 1).

Figure 1 — Version verification procedure window

If a newer version is found, the user will be prompted to update the Program (see Figures 2 and 3). Press the
"OK" button to update the Program, or press the "Skip" button to launch the current version of the Program
without updating.

The main window of the Program appears when the launch is complete.

3.1.2 Exit

The program can be closed by any of the methods available in the Windows OS.

3.1.3 Network structure

All PCs with the console program installed and ILS devices are connected to a network with an extended
star topology. Accordingly, these PCs and devices are elements of this network, connected to each other via
ports. Each element of the network can be used as a node for communication between other elements.

The network addressing is determined according to the network structure by the numbers of outgoing ports
(directions) on the route from the observer device (for example, user's PC with the Program installed) to the
target device (any other device in the network whose address is displayed in the Program).

For example, according to Figure 5 for the User PC: the Central processor unit of Loc 734 has the address
"4D", GP 734 has the address "4E", and the Monitor device of the Kit 2 of Loc 734 has the address "4D6".

Specifying the address helps to distinguish between devices of the same type and name.

3.1.4 Architecture

The Program architecture consists of three main modules (see Figure 6):

– User module;
– Service module;
– Network module.

The user module is a graphical interface that provides the Program user with the tools to control, configure
and monitor devices of landing and navigation system.

The service module processes information from devices to display it in the interface, as well as this module
processes the data and commands to be sent to devices. The service module is also used to perform the
following functions:

a) Connecting to a database with device descriptions and reading up-to-date descriptions;

b) Scanning the network environment and searching for all connected devices;
c) Defining the types of detected devices according to the descriptions from a database;
d) Forming network structure (see paragraph 3.3). the network module provides a connection of devices
at the physical level and data exchange with connected devices via network protocols.

[Link] Widgets

The Program uses three types of widgets:

a) Widgets for editing signal parameters and controlling devices;

b) Widgets of processed telemetry data;
c) Widgets for representing information in graphical form.

Most of the widgets are presented by tables, the cells of which contain device parameters or telemetry data.
Data in the table columns is grouped parameter types, data in the table rows is grouped by sources (channels,
kits or antennas, depending on the type of device).

Each of the table-widgets contains the "Update indicator" and "Channel"/"Kit" columns. The widgets that
display telemetry data include the "Monitoring" column.

The "Channel"/"Kit" column displays the names of the respective channels/kits. The "Update indicator"
column contains the indicators , designating the time that has passed since the last update of the channel/kit
parameters. The brightness of the indicator shows the data relevance in the row: the brighter the indicator,
the later the data was updated.

The "Monitoring" column contains checkboxes showing the extent of monitored parameters in a channel/
Kit. The possible checkbox states are presented in Table 7.

The order of columns in a table-widget can be changed by grabbing one of the columns with the left mouse
button and then dragging it to the desired position.

There are three types of cells in table-widgets depending on the way their parameters are edited: cells with
threshold values and a reference point (see Figure 20), cells with amplification values (see Figure 21), and
numeric cells (see Figure 22).

[Link].1 Setting threshold values (thresholds)

All parameter values can have four states and be highlighted with the following indicator colors:
"Normal" — green, "Warning" — yellow, "Alarm" — red, "Unknown" — grey.

Cells intended for telemetry data can display both parameter values and estimates of these values. This
display method makes it easier to monitor the parameter values and allows to detect malfunctions faster.
In order to evaluate the values in each of these cells, it is necessary to set a reference point, as well as the
upper and lower limits of permissible values — threshold values. If the value goes out of these limits, the
"Alarm" signal appears. The values of monitored parameters are obtained by calculation.

The values of the upper and lower limits for the "Warning" signal to appear (if the parameter value goes
out of these limits) are percentages of the upper and lower threshold values respectively. Warning ranges
are set by the user and determined by:

– The difference between the lower limit for warning and the minimum threshold value;
– The difference between the upper limit for warning and the maximum threshold value.

The parameter values that do not go out of the limits of appearing the "Warning" and "Alarm" signals are
within the "Normal" state.

Threshold values can be set automatically or manually.

The procedure of automatic thresholds setting involves the accumulation of values for each of the selected
parameters, their averaging and setting the resulting value as a reference point. The minimum and maximum
thresholds are calculated by a user-specified offset up and down from the reference point.

The "Automatic limits setup" window is used to set the thresholds automatically (see Figure 23).

Table-widgets of some devices contain columns with amplifications. Each cell of the column with
amplifications consists of two parts: the left side indicates a signal level in arbitrary units on the device
detector, the right side indicates an offset voltage value at the device amplifier (in mV). The amplification
selection for each channel can be done both manually and automatically.

Manual amplification setting involves editing the value of the right side of the cell directly in the table and
tracking the resulting parameter in the left side of the cell.

Manual amplification setting is performed in a separate window (see Figure 26), which includes:

– The sliders for an amplification range;

[Link].4 Setting amplifications

The ILS 734 monitor device can operate in a wide dynamic range. In order to measure the parameters with
the required accuracy, it is necessary to ensure the optimal level of signals on the detectors of the monitor
device, which is achieved by selecting the signal amplifications inside the device for each channel separately.
Amplifications selection is carried out after the Loc 734 output power is set.

In the "Monitoring antennas" widget described in paragraph [Link].3 the "Gain" column is used to configure
channel amplifications.

For transmitting antennas, the power of the Course and Clearance signals do not depend on each other
and do not coincide, therefore, the amplifications selection for the Course and Clearance of each antenna
must be done separately. Amplifications values for the Course and Clearance are displayed in the columns
of the "Aperture grid monitoring" widget in the Loc 734 control center ("NB boost incident", "NB boost
reflected", "WB boost incident", "WB boost reflected"). Amplification setting in the columns of table-
widgets is described in detail in paragraph [Link].2.

The minimum amplification value is 300 mV (voltage at the amplifier of the monitor device), the maximum
amplification value is 1300 mV. The optimal signal level on the detector is 8. The Course signals and
Clearance signals on some of the aperture monitoring antennas significantly differ in power (by more than
5 dB), and that creates a problem when detecting a signal on a lower power channel. In this case, a signal
with a lower power should not have such an amplification that causes the signal level with a higher power
significantly exceed the optimal one. Thus, the optimal signal level (amplification) is selected for a channel
with a higher power at first. Then the amplification value of a channel with a higher power is set for a
channel with a lower power.

4.2.4 Telemetry
The "Telemetry" tool allows to track the history of all recent events related to the internal state and
functioning of a facility. In order to run the "Telemetry" tool, use one of the following methods:

a) select a facility from the "Facilities" panel of the main window of the Program (paragraph 4.1.2) and
press the "Telemetry" button on the "Facility information" panel (paragraph 4.1.3);
b) Open the "Tools" tab in the header of the Program main window (paragraph 4.1.1) and press
the "Telemetry" button on the tab (paragraph [Link]).

The "Telemetry" tool window consists of a header, a menu, and a workspace. The header contains the tool
name and the window control buttons (see Table 2). The menu includes the items "Sources" and "Log". The
content of the workspace depends on the item selected in the menu.

[Link] "Sources" item

The "Sources" item contains facilities that are sources of telemetry data — a sequence of messages with
information about the internal state and functioning of the facility. First, a connection to a source is made,
then the storage buffer of the central processor unit begins to receive messages with telemetry data, and
these received messages are displayed in real time in the telemetry log (see paragraph [Link]).

Each source is presented as a separate widget (see Figure 69). The source widget contains information about
the facility (the "Information" area) and controls (the "Profile settings" and "List of topics" areas). Pressing
the "Add a device" button, located in the upper right corner of the "Telemetry of the device" window, opens
a dialog window for selecting a source and creating a widget. A widget can be removed from the "Sources"
item workspace by pressing the button in the upper right corner of the widget (not the "Telemetry of the
device" window).

In order to start collecting telemetry data, perform the following actions:

a) Select a source;
b) Configure settings in the "Profile settings" and "List of topic" areas of the source widget;
c) Press the "Connect" button at the bottom of the widget.

The collecting of telemetry data can be stopped by pressing the "Disconnect" button in the lower right corner
of the widget.

The button in the "Information" area allows to view the error log (if any).

Figure 69 — "Sources" item workspace

The "Profile settings" area contains the telemetry data collecting parameters:

a) "Ignore history" checkbox — determines whether telemetry data generated before connecting to the
facility will be displayed:
– checked box — all messages are displayed;
– Unchecked box — only messages received after connection are displayed;
b) "Loop recording" checkbox — determines the action to take on messages that are received after the
storage buffer is full:

– checked box — new messages are stored in the storage buffer instead of old ones: when a new
message is received, the oldest message is deleted;
– Unchecked box — new messages are not stored in the storage buffer;
c) "Strategy" drop-down list — filters messages by groups.

The "List of topics" area contains a list of message types. The checkbox next to a message type determines
whether messages of this type are displayed in the telemetry log: checked box — messages are shown,
unchecked box — messages are hidden. Note that a message can belong to several types.
[Link] "Log" item

The "Log" item contains a telemetry log. The telemetry log is a list of messages from sources of telemetry
data (see Figure 70). The telemetry log is common for all facilities connected in the "Sources" item. New
messages automatically appear in the telemetry log in real time. The columns of the telemetry log are
described in Table 28.

1.4 Operation principle

1.4.1 The FFM 734 structural diagram is shown in Figure 1.

FFM 734 consists of the following main parts: the Antenna (NFM Antenna System), the FFM 734 Unit
(With the Monitor Device), the AC/DC 24 V Power Supply Unit and the UPS.

1.4.2 The NFM Antenna System is designed to receive the signal of Loc 734 (installed on the opposite end
of the runway) in a far area and to transmit the ILS format signal via an RF cable to the Monitor Device
for analysis.

1.4.3 The FFM 734 Unit functional diagram is shown in Figure 2.

Figure 1 — FFM 734 structural diagram

1.5 Functional diagram description

1.5.1 The FFM 734 Unit consists of a housing and a printed circuit board, on which all controls and
indications are located.

The board (Monitor Device RAPG.468169.003) consists of a receiver and a processor. The receiver is made
according to a superheterodyne circuit with one frequency conversion to an IF of 86.9 MHz HF signals are
sent to the RF switch, where the required antenna is selected. Input band-pass filters provide the frequency
range selection (Loc or GP) and the attenuation of the HF signals outside the operating frequency range
of the selected radio beacon. The filtered HF signal is fed to low-noise amplifiers D20 (LNA1) and/or D21
(LNA2). Then the signal goes to mixer D27.

BASIC ILS CONCEPT COURSE FOR
ILS NPO-734 Unit Training Course

1.5.2 The IF signal of 86.9 MHz from the mixer goes to an IF filter and then to an adjustable digital
attenuator with an attenuation adjustment range of 32 dB. Then the signal can be fed either to dual
amplifier D28 + D30 (LNA3 and LNA4), or directly to the IF filter. After that, the signal is fed to the
input of a quadrature detector, at the output of which two orthogonal signal components I and Q are
formed. These quadrature components are further treated by the processor. The result of processing are
DDM and SDM values.
1.5.3 A heterodyne is made using the principle of direct digital signal synthesis. A signal is formed
mathematically by the signal processor, which allows to generate signals with any values of amplitude,
frequency and phase of both modulating signals and carrier frequency signals. Generated digital data is fed
to a DAC, where it is converted into the HF signal, which goes to a band-pass filter. Then the signal is
amplitude adjusted by a digital amplifier. The adjustment range is about 60 dB. After that, the signal goes
to the 16.5 dB amplifier. Then the signal is sent to the mixer.

1.5.4 Voltage regulators form all the necessary voltages to power the device modules:

– 1.9 V — for a processor core;

– 3.3 V — for an input-output device, a direct digital synthesis circuit and processor peripherals;
– 5 V — for amplifiers and connection interfaces;
– 3.3 V — for a quadrature detector and a heterodyne;
– 24 V — for sound notification.

All markings of indicators, controls, supply voltages and element position designations are put on the printed
circuit board.

4.0 Structure and operation principle

4.1 Structure

4.1.1 T h e Interlock Unit consists of two circuit boards: Control Unit RAPG.468353.008 and Indication
Unit RAPG.468382.002, connected with each other by a 20-pin ribbon cable. The connection diagram is
shown in Figure 3. The Interlock Unit contains the main and backup AC/DC 24 V Power Supply Units.

4.1.2 T h e Control Unit is a digital system with two operation modes: slave system mode and master system
mode. In slave system mode the Control Unit receives and processes the input INTERLOCK signal, the
operating kit status and other signals from remote Control Units or similar devices; in this mode the Control
Unit also transmits data to DM 734. In master system mode the Control Unit transmits data about the
activation of the required system to DM 734, calculates the integral estimate of the INTERLOCK signal,
and transmits the blocking signal to remote Control Units or similar devices. The system status is displayed
on the front panel of the Interlock Unit in both operation modes.

4.1.3 In slave system mode, the guard interval must be handled by an external system. It may be
unnecessary to stay on standby in this mode (configurable parameter).

4.2 Operation principle

4.2.1 R e m o t e access devices or similar third-party devices can be connected via the following
interfaces: UART (RS-232 and RS-485), analog telephone line or dry and wet contacts.

4.2.2 R S -232 (XS1), RS-485 (XS2) — physical layer standards for asynchronous UART interface. In order
to connect via RS-232, a three-wire communication line is used (on the Interlock Unit side):

– TX Data (pin 5);

– Rx Data (pin 4);
– Ground (pin 3).

4.2.3 I n order to connect via RS-485, 5 communication lines (full-duplex) are used (on the Interlock Unit
side):

– Data IN+ (pin 2);

– Data IN− (pin 4);

– Data OUT+ (pin 5);

– Data OUT− (pin 6);
– Ground (pin 3).

4.2.4 T h e UART interface protocol is described in Appendix A.

4.2.5 D r y contact (XP6) is an opt coupler serving as an input that allows another system to control the
Interlock Unit.

– DRY_Input_1 (pin 1);

– DRY_Ground_1 (pin 2);
– DRY_Input_2 (pin 3);
– DRY_Ground_2 (pin 4).

4.2.6 W e t contact (XP6) is an opt coupler serving as an output that allows another system to control the
Interlock Unit.

– DRY_Output_1 (pin 1);

– DRY_Ground_1 (pin 2);
– DRY_Output_2 (pin 3);
– DRY_Ground_2 (pin 4).

4.2.7 T h e r e are several general rules for dry and wet contacts:

– An operating pair of signals is selected depending on the operation mode (master/slave)

(configured by software);
– All inputs are filtered from chatter;
– The communication line is monitored for break;
– The signals logic is inverse:
• ON_1: 1 ON_2: 1 — OFF;
• ON_1: 1 ON_2: 0 — ON2;
• ON_1: 0 ON_2: 1 — ON1;
• ON_1: 0 ON_2: 0 — Break / No connection

4.2.8 T h e LOCK, INTERLOCK signals are always relevant and do not depend on the selected physical
interface for communication with an external system.

LOCK — input, the requirement of an external system to block the systems switching.
INTERLOCK — output, the result of calculating the blocking signal.
4.2.9 T h e direction of the LOCK and INTERLOCK signals does not depend on the operation mode
(Master/slave).

– Analog telephone line (XP7) — modem communication line supporting protocols up to V.92;
• TIP (pin 1);
• RING (pin 2).

Attention! The interface for communication with an external system is selected by hardware, by
setting jumpers XP14/XP15 ("ANALOG"/"RS-232/485").

4.2.10 T h e Interlock Unit operation logic.

Master/slave system mode is selected by software.
– Master — an external system is controlled via the selected interface using DM 734 (RC) or local
switches (LC);
– Slave — a group of objects in DM 734 is controlled by an external system (RC) or local switches (LC).
LC/RC mode is selected by a local switch or remotely.
In RC mode:

– The physical buttons for systems switching are inactive;

– The INTERLOCK signal is taken into account;
– The control commands received from DM 734 (master) or via the external system interface (slave)
Are applied.
In LC mode:

– The physical buttons for systems switching are active;

– The INTERLOCK signal is ignored;
– The control commands received from DM 734 or an external system are ignored.

The INTERLOCK signal:

– is calculated as a logical conjunction of all LOCK signals (if at least one signal is LOCK — all signals
are LOCK);
– prohibits systems switching while has an active level;
– has a bypass mode, in which the INTERLOCK signal is ignored; this mode is activated locally (with
the "LC/RC" switch) or remotely.

A system switches after a guard interval of 20 seconds in the following cases:

– A command for system switching is received;

– A command to shut down the current system is sent;
– waiting for the shutdown of the current system;
– waiting 20 seconds;
– A command to enable the selected system is sent.

Appendix A: UART interface

In master system mode, the following message is sent with a period of several seconds (configurable,
1...30 s):

<0x0a>FSI734Command :{ cmd :"< CMD>", interlock :"< LCK>"} <0x0d>

Where·CMD — on1/on2/off/none,

LCK — lock/unlock.

In this case the remote system should give the following response within 1 s (configurable):

<0x0a>FSI734Reply :{ state :"< STATE>", lock :"< LCK>"} <0x0d>

where· STATE — on1/on1.../on2/on2.../off/off...,

LCK — lock/unlock.

In slave system mode, the messages are swapped. If the remote system does not respond (is inactive) for a
configurable period of time, then it is considered as a loss of connection.

The UART common parameters (speed, parity, etc.) are configurable.

Appendix B: DM 734 parameters

Options available: None/Master/Slave.

For the master system mode, it is necessary to select two groups of objects (facilities) that will be
controlled by the Interlock Unit:

– Local group — a group with Loc 734 and GP 734;

– External group — a group representing an external system.

For the slave system mode, it is necessary to select a group of objects (facilities) controlled via FSI:

– Local group — a group with Loc 734 and GP 734.

DM 734 indications related to the Interlock Unit:

– Status — the system is currently active / in operation;

– interlock — the INTERLOCK statuses;
– override — bypassing the INTERLOCK signal.
For an active system, pressing the ON button for a kit leads to a regular kits switching. For an inactive
system:

– Systems switching is prohibited (INTERLOCK) — group control buttons are blocked;

– systems switching is allowed — pressing the ON button for a kit leads to the shutdown of an
external system, a 20 s delay and turning on the required kit; then the system switches to the active
state.

State — the external object (facility) state: On1/On2/Off/Unknown.
