items. Sometimes, consumers may be cheated by sellers through poor quality products, high
prices, or false advertisements. To protect consumers from such unfair practices, certain rights and
laws have been created.

Understanding Consumers
A consumer is a person who buys goods or services for personal use. Consumers are the final
users of products and play an important role in the economy.

Consumers often face problems such as defective products, overcharging, misleading
advertisements, fake products, and lack of information.
Consumer Protection Movement in India
This movement began to protect buyers from unfair trade practices and gained importance in the
1960s and 1970s.
Consumer Protection Act, 1986
This law was passed to protect consumer rights and provide a simple and quick method for
resolving disputes.
Three-Tier System
District Forum at district level, State Commission at state level, and National Commission at
national level help in solving consumer complaints.
