Statistics Assignment
1. Concept of Population and Sample
Population: The complete group of individuals or items under study. Example: All students in a
university.
Sample: A small part of the population selected for study.
Target Population: The group we want information about.
Sampled Population: The group from which the sample is actually taken.
Finite Population: Limited number of elements.
Infinite Population: Unlimited elements.
Discrete Population: Countable values.
Continuous Population: Measurable values.
2. Concept of Sampling
Sampling: Process of selecting a sample from population.
Sampling with Replacement: Selected item is returned before next selection.
Sampling without Replacement: Selected item is not returned.
Sample Survey: Study based on sample.
Census: Study of whole population.
Advantages of Sampling
1 Saves time
2 Saves cost
3 Easy to manage
4 Useful for large population
3. Sampling Types
Probability Sampling: Every element has equal chance.
Non-Probability Sampling: Based on judgment or convenience.
4. Probability Sampling Methods
Simple Random Sampling: Equal chance for all.
Stratified Random Sampling: Population divided into strata.
Systematic Sampling: Every k-th element selected.
Cluster Sampling: Whole groups selected.
5. Non-Probability Sampling Methods
Purposive Sampling: Based on researcher judgment.
Quota Sampling: Fixed number from groups.
Stratified Random Sampling
Used when population is heterogeneous. Population is divided into homogeneous strata and
samples are taken from each.
Steps
1 Divide population into non-overlapping strata
2 Each element belongs to one group
3 Take random samples from each group
4 Combine to form final sample
6. Sampling Distribution and Standard Error
Sampling Distribution: Distribution of statistics from all possible samples.
Sampling Distribution of Mean: Distribution of sample means.
Standard Error: SE = σ / √n (σ = standard deviation, n = sample size)
