The University of New South Wales commenced as the New South Wales University of Technology in 1949. It became the University of New South
Wales in 1958. The University is commonly known as UNSW or by its registered business name, UNSW Sydney.

From 1951 the University administered on behalf of the Department of Technical Education a number of diploma programs leading to the award of
Associateship of Sydney Technical College. The programs were withdrawn in 1959.

In 1951 a University College was established at Newcastle. It became the University of Newcastle in 1965. In 1954 a University College was

Wollongong in 1975.

In 1967 the Faculty of Military Studies was established at the Royal Military College, Duntroon, in the Australian Capital Territory. In 1981 the
University College at the Australian Defence Force Academy was established. The Academy was opened in 1986 and the activities of the Faculty of
Military Studies were absorbed into the University College, known as UNSW Canberra at ADFA.

In 1990 the former St George Institute was amalgamated with the University. Also in 1990 the former City Art Institute was amalgamated with the
University and is now known as UNSW Art & Design. St George Institute was an institute of the Sydney College of Advanced Education from 1982
