The given graph illustrates the proportion of

government expenditure on road and transport in


4 countries including Italia, Portugal, the UK, and
the USA over a period of 25 years commencing
from 1990.

Overall, the share of government spending on


road and transport in Italia, Portugal, and the UK
rose while the opposite trend was true for the
figures for the USA. It is also noticeable that
Portugal spent the most amount of money on
road and transport during the examined period.

Portugal’s government invested more than a


quarter in road and transportation, after which it
declined dramatically to 20 % in 2005. Conversely,
the opposite trend can be seen in the figures for
the USA. Starting at just over 10%, the USA’s
expenditures witnessed a slight fluctuation before
reaching a peak of 15% in 2005.

Looking at other countries, the figures for Italia


declined from 22% to shy of 20% between 1990 and 2005 after showing a period of volatility. A similar trend can be seen in the ratio of UK
government spending on road and transport, but to a lesser extent, dropped to about 7% in the last year of the period.
