Search Engine
A search engine is a special tool on the internet that helps you find information
quickly. A search engine is like a super-smart librarian for the internet, which is a
library with billions of pages! It helps you find exactly what you're looking for.

How Search Engines Work

Every search engine follows these three simple steps to bring you the best answers:

1. CRAWL : Tiny computer programs called crawlers (or spiders) explore the Internet 24/7,
visiting web pages and following links to find new content. They never sleep!

2. INDEX : After crawling, the information is organized into a giant digital catalog called
an index. This is just like the index at the back of a textbook, listing every topic and the page
numbers where you can find it.

3. RANK : When you type a search, the engine looks through its index and uses a secret
formula (called an algorithm) to decide the most useful and trustworthy results. The very best

TYPES OF SEARCH ENGINES

1. Crawler-Based: Uses special programs called "spiders" or "crawlers" to
automatically explore the web and collect information. Everyone uses the same
index when they search. Examples are Google, Bing, Yahoo

2. Human-Powered Directories: Real people (human editors) review and hand-

pick websites to include in the directory. It's like a librarian personally choosing
the best books for a list.

3. Hybrid Search Engines: They use crawlers for most results but also add
human-reviewed directories to be more accurate. Most top engines use this
hybrid method.
 4. Meta Search Engines: Do not crawl the web themselves. Instead, they send
your question to multiple other search engines at once (like Google, Bing, and
Yahoo) and combine the best results for you.

Ways of Handling Search Results

You have typed your question, clicked "Search", and now you see a long list of results.
Below are some ways of handling search results

1. Use the Right Keys (Keywords): Choose the most important words. Instead of
typing "What is the longest river in Ghana?", try "longest river Ghana" – this is
shorter and stronger!
2. Scan the Results Page: Look at the title (usually in blue) and the short
description (in black) to see if it matches what you need.
3. Check the Web Address (URL): Be a detective! A URL ending
in .gov (government) or .edu (school/university) is often more reliable than a
random blog.
4. Use Filters: Click Images, Videos, or News to narrow your search to only certain
types of results.
5. Change Your Keywords: If you don't find what you need the first time, try again
with different words. Search engines love helping you learn.

WEB FORMS
A form on a webpage is like a digital question paper. It has empty spaces where you
type your answers, or boxes you click to choose an option. When you finish, you click
a button (like Submit or Register) to send your information.
Common Parts of a Web Form
1. Text field is a short empty rectangular box
for typing username, email, or address.
2. Text Area is a large empty rectangular
box for typing long message or comment.
3. Drop-down box is an arrow facing
downward for choosing one option from
a list.
4. Combo box is like a search box that gives
suggestions
5. Radio button is a circular button for
choosing one option only.
6. Checkbox is a small square like shape for
choosing many options.
7. Submit Button is a clickable button for
sending your answers to a website.
 HOW TO FILL AN ONLINE FORM

1. Open a website that has a form.

2. Click inside the first text field and fill it.
3. Press Tab on your keyboard to jump to the
next box.
4. For drop-down boxes – click the arrow,
then click your choice.
5. For radio buttons – click the circle next to
your choice (you can only pick one).
6. For checkboxes – click the square to put a
tick. You can tick many.
7. Read everything again – check for mistakes.
8. Click the Submit button to send your form.

OFFLINE FORM
An offline form is not connected to the internet. You can:
Print it on paper and fill it with a pen.
Save it on a computer (e.g., a Word document) and type into it without internet.

HOW TO FILL AN OFFLINE FORM (PAPER VERSION)

1. Print the form using a printer.
2. Use a blue or black pen (not red, not
pencil unless told).
3. Write clearly inside the boxes or on
the lines.
4. Tick the correct checkboxes or circle
the right radio button.
5. Sign your name if there is a signature
line.
6. Give the paper form to the person in
charge.

1. Open the form file (e.g., a PDF or
Word document) on your
computer.
