Read the following passage carefully and then answer questions 41 to 45 by writing the correct answers in
the special answer sheet (OMR) provided. Use blue or black ink pen.

Mbuto was supposed to be school with his friends, but at the age of thirteen, he was working at Majcje Gold
Minc. His troubles started when he was in Standard Five. His father Mr. Kikuko whose activity was to make
furniture got sick and eventually passed away. His mother also got sick and could not work anymore. There
were no relatives to take care of his family. Mbuto being the eldest of the four children and the only boy,
dropped out of school.

Life became tough for Mbuto. He tried selling sweets and cigarettes on the street but the money was not
enough. He then got a job in a mine. There were eleven children under the age of eighteen years old: two
girls and nine boys including him working in the mine. Their work was to carry soil from deep down the
mine up to the surface. One day while Mbuto was carrying a heavy bucket, he fell over and broke his left
leg. He cried in pain knowing that he could not look after his family. He was then carried to the hospital.

One nurse felt pity for him and promised to take care of his family and send him back to school. Mbuto went
back to school, worked very hard and had a very good performance in his final examinations.

41. What is Mr. Kikuko's occupation?

Mr. Kikuko’s occupation was making furniture. The passage says clearly that his activity was to make
furniture, showing that his work involved carpentry.

42. Why did Mbuto engage in child labour?

Mbuto engaged in child labour because both of his parents were sick and unable to work, and there were
no relatives to support the family. This forced him, as the eldest child, to find work to support his
siblings.

43. Why did Mbuto cry a lot after he broke his left leg?
He cried because he knew he would not be able to continue working to support his family. The pain
worried him since he felt responsible for taking care of his younger siblings.

44. Why did Mbuto go to work at Majeje Gold mine instead of going to school?
He stopped going to school because life became too difficult after his parents fell sick and died. He
needed money, and selling sweets did not give him enough income, so he decided to work in the mine.

45. What made Mbuto return back to the school?

A nurse felt pity for him, promised to take care of his family, and agreed to support him so that he could
return to school. This help allowed him to resume his studies.

hospital, Chausiku’s mother wanted to see the doctor but the nurse told her that the doctor was

Chausiku started vomiting. She was sweating too. Her body temperature was high. She had a
fever. Her mother could not wait any longer. She went back to the nurse to ask for the doctor. She
spoke politely, “Nurse, could you please request the doctor to attend Chausiku?” The nurse left
for a while then returned and reported that the doctor is still busy with other patients. Chausiku’s
mother requested for her daughter to be attended by another doctor. Therefore, the nurse referred
Chausiku to another doctor. She was taken to the Laboratory for further diagnosis. The results
revealed that Chausiku was suffering from malaria.
The doctor asked Chausiku if she has a habit of using the mosquito net. Chausiku said that she is
rarely using the mosquito net. The doctor advised Chausiku to use mosquito net always in order
to protect herself from getting malaria. Chausiku was given medicine and returned home with her
mother.
