Detailed Shell Model Magic Numbers Notes

The Nuclear Shell Model describes the structure and stability of atomic nuclei, where protons and neutrons occupy quantized energy levels in a potential field. Magic numbers (2, 8, 20, 28, 50, 82, 126) indicate completely filled shells, leading to enhanced stability, and the model incorporates spin-orbit coupling to explain observed phenomena. While successful in many aspects, the model has limitations in addressing strongly deformed nuclei and collective motion.

DETAILED NOTES: NUCLEAR SHELL MODEL AND

MAGIC NUMBERS
[Link]./[Link]. Nuclear Physics – Exam-Oriented Notes

1. Introduction
The Nuclear Shell Model explains the structure and stability of atomic nuclei. According to this
model, protons and neutrons move independently in a common potential field created by all
nucleons. Just as electrons occupy atomic shells, nucleons occupy nuclear shells with discrete
energy levels.

2. Basic Assumptions
• Each nucleon moves independently inside the nucleus. • Nucleons occupy quantized energy
states. • Pauli exclusion principle is valid. • Nuclear force creates an average potential well. •
Spin-orbit interaction plays a crucial role.

3. Magic Numbers
Magic numbers are the numbers of protons or neutrons corresponding to completely filled nuclear
shells. Nuclei possessing these numbers exhibit exceptional stability.
Magic Numbers: 2, 8, 20, 28, 50, 82, 126

4. Experimental Evidence
1. High natural abundance of nuclei with magic numbers.
2. Greater binding energy per nucleon.
3. Higher first excited-state energies.
4. Smaller neutron capture cross-sections.
5. Greater nuclear stability and longer lifetimes.

5. Spin-Orbit Coupling
The original shell model failed to explain the observed magic numbers. Mayer and Jensen
introduced strong spin-orbit coupling. The interaction between the orbital angular momentum (l) and
spin (s) splits energy levels, producing the experimentally observed sequence of magic numbers.

6. Energy Level Sequence

1s1/2 → 2 nucleons
1p3/2, 1p1/2 → total 8
1d5/2, 2s1/2, 1d3/2 → total 20
1f7/2 → total 28
Further levels lead to 50, 82 and 126.

7. Doubly Magic Nuclei

Nuclei having both proton number and neutron number equal to magic numbers are called doubly
magic nuclei.
Examples: He-4 (2,2), O-16 (8,8), Ca-40 (20,20), Ca-48 (20,28), Pb-208 (82,126).

8. Successes of Shell Model

• Explains magic numbers.
• Explains nuclear spin and parity.
• Predicts magnetic moments.
• Explains stability of nuclei.
• Explains energy level structure.

9. Limitations
• Not very successful for strongly deformed nuclei.
• Does not fully explain collective nuclear motion.
• Uses average potential approximation.

10. Important Exam Questions

1. State and explain the Nuclear Shell Model.
2. What are magic numbers? Give evidence.
3. Explain the role of spin-orbit coupling.
4. What are doubly magic nuclei?
5. Discuss successes and limitations of the shell model.

11. 5-Mark Exam Answer

The nuclear shell model assumes that nucleons move independently in discrete energy levels
inside the nucleus. Filled shells correspond to magic numbers (2, 8, 20, 28, 50, 82, 126), which
provide extra stability. The introduction of spin-orbit coupling successfully explains the observed
magic numbers. The model explains nuclear spin, parity, magnetic moments and nuclear stability.
