Topic: Conditionals (Type 1 and Type 2)
Duration: 1 week ,5 Units,35 minutes each
Aim: To enable students to understand, identify, and use First Conditional and
Second Conditional sentences correctly in spoken and written communication.
Objectives/ SLOs:
Make predictions
Identify the class of conditionals
Construct grammatically correct Type 1 and Type 2 conditional sentences.
Apply conditionals appropriately to express real and unreal situations.
Participate in discussions and activities using conditional forms accurately.
Materials/Resources: white board, text book, print outs, slide share ,slips for the
mystery game
Warm up: "The Mystery Box of Possibilities"
Bring a box or bag containing slips of paper with unusual situations written on
them. Ask the students to pick a slip and think of a response. As it’s a hypothetical
situation so the sentence will begin with IF as a reply.
Situations:
You wake up and discover you can read minds.
School is cancelled tomorrow.
You find a hidden door in your house.
You become the principal for a day.
It starts snowing in your city.
You win a free trip to any country.
Animals suddenly begin talking.
The teacher will highlight that some situations are real and possible, while
others are imaginary or unlikely. Introduce the terms First Conditional and
Second Conditional.
Methodology:
What are conditionals?
These types of sentences are used to express possible or imaginary situations. A
conditional sentence states a condition and the outcome of that condition
occurring. They are often referred to as “if clauses” because they often begin the
same way. Here are a few examples:
Future event – If I have a test tomorrow, I will study tonight.
Hypothetical situation – If I had a million dollars, I would buy a boat.
In short, conditionals are statements that describe both hypothetical and real
scenarios. They are often referred to as “if clauses” because they often begin the
same way.
Structure of IF-Conditionals
Main part: will + infinitive; if part: Present Simple
This conditional is used to talk about future events that might happen. It uses
the present tense to discuss the possible future events. For example:
If you come with me, I will make it worthwhile for you.
If I go abroad, I will get something back for you.
If you visit Paris, you must see the Eiffel Tower.
Second Conditional
Main part: would + infinitive; if part: Past Simple
This conditional is used to talk about the unreal possibility or impossible events.
They establish the course of action that would follow, where something to happen
is either hypothetical or surreal. For example:
If I had a million dollars, I would buy a penthouse on Park Avenue.
I could stop working if I won the lottery.
If I were well-versed in the subject, I would help you with your assignment
Pair Activity
Students receive mixed sentences and identify whether they are Type 1 or Type 2.
Examples:
If I see Ahmed, I will tell him. (Type 1)
If I were a bird, I would fly around the world. (Type 2)
If she practices daily, she will improve. (Type 1)
If they had more time, they would join us. (Type 2)
