Density Lab

The virtual density lab aimed to determine the densities of aluminum, brick, and mystery objects by analyzing their mass and volume relationships. The experiment demonstrated that objects with higher densities sink while those with lower densities float, using a simulation to visualize these principles. The findings included specific densities for the tested materials and identified likely materials for mystery blocks based on their buoyancy.

Density Lab

5/21/2026
Purpose of the experiment
The purpose for this virtual density lab is
to figure out the density of aluminum and brick
as well as mystery object by using their
relationship to mass and volume. In a
simulation. By finding whether the objects
floats or sinks. (higher density objects sunk
while lower density items floated)

Equations used to solve

Density formula- Density = Mass divided by Volume. D=M/V

Mass Formula- Mass = Density times Volume. M=D*V

Volume Formula- Volume = Mass divided by Density. V=M/D

Lab Begin
So I started my lab with my brick at a 10 kg mass and 5.00L Volume. the
water was at 100 L. I observed that once I drop the a brick inside of the
water it sunk immediately and the water went up to 105 L while the brick
stayed at 10 kg I had similar yet lighter results with my B block of aluminum
which sat at 10 kg and 3.7 L of volume. The water once at 100 L rolls up to
103.7 L. when I dropped the aluminum block in which sunk to the bottom.
using the formula density is kilograms over liters my brick block a was a little
under glass at 2 kg over liters while my aluminum block B was at the same
density as glass with 2.70 kg over liters. I put both my brick a block and
aluminum B block at the same mass to show the objects with the same
mass, but different volumes will behave differently in the water.

Object Mass(kg) Volume(L) Density Float or sink

(kg/L)
Brick 10 5 2 Float
Aluminum 10 3.70 2.70 Sink

For the next part of the experiment, I went to the mystery items and started
by recording their weight in kilograms block 1B was at .40 kg, block 1C was
at 19.32 kg, block 1D was at 5 kg, block 1E was at 2.80 kg and lastly block
1A was at 19.30kg. I saw that blocks 1E and 1B float while blocks 1D, 1A and
1C sunk to the bottom.

The given density table had the following data…

Material Density (kg/L

Wood 0.40
Gasoline 0.68
Apple 0.83
Ice 0.92
Human 0.95
Water 1.00
Glass 2.70
Diamond 3.51
Titanium 4.50
Steel 7.80
Cooper 8.96
Lead 11.34
Gold 19.32

Using all of the data given and the formula Density = Mass/ Volume

Mystery Block Weight Float or sink? Likely Material

1B .40 kg float Wood
1C 19.32kg Sink Gold
1D 5.00kg Sink Titanium
1E 2.80 kg Partially float Glass
1A 19.30 kg Sank Gold

The issue with the styrofoam is that it is not fully submerging which makes it
hard to calculate the density using the water displacement that the other
materials have which is what I believe this lab showed the most by helping
us visualize how Destiny determines whether objects sink or float although
the formula for density is dividing mass by volume by seeing the water and
the blocks in this experiment we were able to see the relation of density,
volume and mass when applied to a realistic simulation
