I feel deeply grateful to my Social Science teacher for giving me this wonderful
opportunity to prepare a project on Disaster Management. While preparing this project, I
learned not only about different kinds of disasters but also how important it is for every
person to stay prepared and alert during emergencies.

This project has increased my awareness about the role of the government, the National
Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), and ordinary citizens in reducing the harmful
effects of disasters. I would also like to thank my parents for encouraging me and helping
me gather information from books and the internet.

I sincerely hope that this project will be useful to others as well in spreading awareness
about disasters and their management.

Introduction
Disasters have been a part of human history since ancient times. They strike without
warning and can cause widespread destruction to life and property. With the increasing
population and rapid urbanisation, the effects of disasters have become more severe.

India is one of the most disaster-prone countries in the world because of its geographical
location and climatic conditions. Our country has high mountains, long coastlines,
deserts, and river basins — each of these regions is vulnerable to different kinds of
disasters.

As students, it is very important for us to study disaster management. It teaches us not

only how to protect ourselves during emergencies but also how to help others. A prepared
community can face disasters with courage, minimise losses, and recover quickly.
What is a Disaster?
The word disaster means a sudden accident or a natural catastrophe that causes great
damage or loss of life. It comes from the Latin words dis (bad) and astrum (star), which
means a bad star or unlucky event.

In modern terms, a disaster can be defined as: 'A serious disruption of the functioning of
a community or society, causing widespread losses which exceed the ability of the
affected people to cope using their own resources.'

Examples:
• Natural: Earthquakes, floods, tsunamis, droughts, landslides, cyclones, volcanic
eruptions.
• Man-Made: Industrial accidents, terrorist attacks, chemical leaks, nuclear accidents,
major fires, oil spills.
Types of Disasters in India
India is highly prone to disasters due to its unique geography:

1. Earthquakes – Northern states like J&K, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Gujarat, and
Delhi.
2. Floods – Bihar, Assam, Uttar Pradesh, Kerala.
3. Cyclones – Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal.
4. Droughts – Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Karnataka.
5. Landslides – Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Sikkim, North-East India.
6. Tsunamis – Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Andaman & Nicobar Islands.
What is Disaster Management?
Disaster Management is the process of preparing for, responding to, and recovering from
disasters in a systematic way.

Four stages:
1. Preparedness – Planning, training, awareness.
2. Mitigation – Reducing severity, e.g. earthquake-resistant buildings.
3. Response – Immediate action: rescue, first aid.
4. Recovery – Rebuilding houses, rehabilitation.
Role of Space Technology in Disaster Management
Space technology has revolutionised disaster management in India. ISRO satellites help
in weather forecasting, early warnings, remote sensing, and communication.

• Early Warning – Predicting cyclones, floods.

• Remote Sensing – Mapping flood areas, drought monitoring.
• GIS – Detailed maps of disaster-prone regions.
• GPS – Helps rescue teams in locating victims.

Example: Cyclone Amphan (2020) was predicted in advance using satellite data.
Specific Hazard – Earthquake (Causes, Effects & Mitigation)
Definition: An earthquake is a sudden shaking of the ground caused by the movement of
tectonic plates beneath the Earth’s crust.

Causes:
• Tectonic movements
• Volcanic eruptions
• Collapse of underground caves/mines
• Man-made (nuclear tests)

Effects:
• Collapsed buildings and roads
• Fires due to gas leaks
• Tsunamis if undersea
• Loss of lives and property

Mitigation Strategies:
✔ Construct earthquake-resistant buildings
✔ Conduct regular drills
✔ Follow 'Drop, Cover, Hold' method
✔ Do not use lifts during tremors
✔ Strengthen disaster plans

Case Study – Gujarat Earthquake (2001):

Magnitude 7.7, killed over 20,000, destroyed property, highlighted need for strict
building codes.
