STSE Science Project

The STSE Science Project requires students to explore the relationship between science and technology, society, or the environment through a chosen topic. Students must present their findings in a creative format, pose an inquiry question, and include APA citations. The example provided focuses on the new chemical technology of superwettability, its applications, benefits to environmental engineers, and its societal and economic impacts.

STSE Science Project

How do the SCIENCE topics/concepts you’ve learned in this course relate to TECHNOLOGY, SOCIETY, or the
ENVIRONMENT?
On your own or with a partner, pick a topic of interest and demonstrate your understanding of this relationship using
an approved format of your choice (eg. video, infographic, comic, storybook, skit, song/rap, slideshow, etc.).
Once completed, you will present your project to the class (2-3 minutes per student). EACH STUDENT will pose an
OPEN-ENDED inquiry question related to their topic to the audience that will spark discussion/debate. A
transcript/script/lyrics, etc. and APA citations (min. 2 credible sources per person) should also be included in your
submission.
Check List:

1. Sign up for your topic on the Google Doc below:

(include partner name if applicable)

1. Complete the Research Template in your own words.

DUE: 2024-12-09

1. Complete Presentation in your chosen format.

1. Submit the following:
■ Upload your submission to Google Drive, and SHARE the link with me:

** Change the PERMISSIONS on your file so it can be viewed by EVERYONE

■ Doc/Slideshow with the transcript/script/lyrics etc

■ Inquiry Question
■ APA Citations

DUE: __________________________________

1. Present your work on the date assigned.

Chemistry: Emerging/New Chemical Technologies

1. Describe the new chemical technology you selected from below and explain what it is used for.
● Aerogels
● Artificial Humic Matter
● Nanozymes
● Semi-synthetic Life
● Sodium Batteries
● Solar Fuels
● Sonochemical Coating
● Small Luminescent Molecules
● Superwettability
● Sustainable Ammonia Production
1. Describe how ONE profession / skilled trade benefits from the development of this chemical
technology.
Consider the following professional sectors:

● Accommodations & Food Services

● Agriculture
● Arts, Culture & Entertainment
● Construction
● Fashion
● Financial
● Fitness & Sport
● Health Care & Social Assistance
● Mining
● Security
1. Identify TWO impacts your chosen technology has or will have on either society, the environment,
or the economy. For example, consider its use, production, or disposal.

Chemistry: Emerging/New Chemical Technologies

Presentation Format: Slideshow Slide Show

New Chemical Technology was chosen: Superwettability

Describe the technology.

Superwettability is the ability of a surface to have extreme wetting or non-wetting properties. Surfaces
can be engineered to be either superhydrophobic (extremely water-repellent) or superhydrophilic
(extremely water-attracting) by modifying their chemical composition or surface structure.
Superwettability doesn’t just refer to water, it’s a property for oils as well. Surfaces can be restructured to
be superoleophobic (extremely oil-repellent) or superoleophilic (extremely oil-attracting).
What is it used for?
- Self-cleaning surfaces (e.g., windows, solar panels)
- Anti-fogging and anti-icing coatings
- Oil-water separation in environmental clean-ups
- Textiles that repel or absorb liquids
Name ONE profession/skilled trades that benefits from this Environmental Engineers
technology.
Describe HOW the profession/skilled trades benefit from this technology's development.
Oil spills and industrial discharges of oily wastewater frequently occur, using superwettability, it can
benefit environmental engineers by cleaning oil spills and purifying water.

Identify TWO impacts your chosen technology will have on either society, the environment or the
economy.
Impact #1 Societal Impact:
HIGHLIGHT Superwettabiliy allows the material to be super repellent or super attractive to
one: liquids. Feng et al used a superhydrophobic and a superhydroleophilic mesh to
Society repel water and absorb the oil.
Environment
Economy

Impact #2 Economic Impact:

HIGHLIGHT Superhydrophobic coatings on surfaces (like glass, textiles, or electronics) can
one: make them water-resistant and self-cleaning, reducing maintenance costs.
Society
Environment
Economy

Inquiry If you could change any material/product’s wettability, what would you change
Question and why?
