Introduction
A consumer is a person who purchases goods or services for personal use. Consumers play a
vital role in the economy. However, they may sometimes face unfair practices, making
consumer protection essential.
Need for Consumer Rights
Consumers may be cheated through overpricing, adulteration, misleading advertisements,
defective goods, and poor services. Consumer rights help protect people from such unfair
practices.
Consumer Exploitation
Common forms include adulteration, underweight goods, black marketing, hoarding,
misleading advertisements, sale of defective products, and charging prices above the MRP.
Rights of Consumers
1. Right to Safety
2. Right to be Informed
3. Right to Choose
4. Right to be Heard
5. Right to Seek Redressal
6. Right to Consumer Education
Each of these rights empowers consumers to make informed decisions and seek justice.
Responsibilities of Consumers
Consumers should check quality marks, ask for bills, read labels carefully, compare prices,
be aware of their rights, and report unfair trade practices.
Consumer Protection Act
The Consumer Protection Act provides legal protection to consumers. The Act was
strengthened through the Consumer Protection Act, 2019, which includes provisions for e-
commerce and product liability.
Consumer Redressal System
Consumer disputes can be resolved through District, State, and National Consumer
Commissions. Consumers can file complaints against unfair practices and seek
compensation.
Consumer Movement in India
The consumer movement gained momentum due to increasing unfair trade practices.
Government initiatives, consumer organizations, and awareness campaigns have
strengthened consumer protection.
Quality Marks
Important quality marks include ISI, AGMARK, Hallmark, FSSAI, and Eco Mark. These marks
help consumers identify safe and reliable products.
Case Study 1
A consumer purchased an electrical appliance that stopped working within a week. After
filing a complaint with proof of purchase, the consumer received a replacement.
Case Study 2
A customer was charged more than the MRP for a packaged product. The complaint led to a
refund and action against the seller.
Consumer Awareness
Consumer awareness means understanding one's rights and responsibilities. The slogan
'Jago Grahak Jago' has played an important role in spreading awareness in India.
Advantages of Consumer Protection
Consumer protection improves product quality, promotes fair competition, increases trust,
and ensures ethical business practices.
Conclusion
Consumer rights are essential for a fair marketplace. Awareness, responsibility, and legal
protection together help consumers safeguard their interests.
