(Counting Methods - Permutations & Combinations, Probability)

1. Roulette tickets numbered 100, 101,..... 469 were kept in a shelf. What is the probability that
a ticket selected at random had a hundreds digit of 1?

2. Amit, Banagir and Chulshul solve a problem independently. The probability of Amit solving
the problem, that of Banagir solving it and that of Chulshul solving it are 3/8, 1/2 and 9/16
respectively. What is the probability of only Chulshul failing to solve the problem?

3. P = {4, 6, 8, 10}
Q = {8, 10, 12, 14, 16)
One integer each was selected randomly from set P and frrom set Q. What is the probability of
the sum these integers not being equal to 16?

4. For an unbiased coin, What is the probability of the coin showing heads at least once when it
is tossed thrice?

5. A right angled triangle GHI is to be formed in a rectangular coordinate system such that the
triangle is right angled at H and HI is parallel to the y-axis. The co-ordinates G, H and I are
integers and satisfy the inequalities -8≤ x ≤ 8 and 7≤y≤15. How many triangles can be formed
such the above conditions are satisfied?

6. A company ships boxed to a total of 21 distribution centers. It plans to use either a single
color or a combination of two different color to represent each distribution center. If the company
can uniquely identify each center by using x colors in total, what is the minimum value of x
7.

How many paths can you take from A to B such that you never passes through any point along
its path more than once?

8. A house has 4 doors and 8 windows. In how many ways can a burglar rob the house by
entering through a window and exiting through a door?

10.

Virat will walk from intersection A to intersection B along a route that is confined to the square
grid of three streets and 4 avenues shown in the above map. How many routes from A to B can
Virat take that have the minimum possible length?

11. David has 12 pairs of matched socks. If he loses 5 individual socks, what is the greatest
number of pairs of matched socks that can be left with him?
(A) 7 (B) 8 (C) 9 (D) 6 (E) 10
12. what is the total number of games played, if a total of 6 teams participate in a tournament
and each team plays against every other team exactly once?

[Link] many diagonals does a convex octagon have ?

14. There are 4 boys and 5 girls willing to serve on a committee. How many 4 member
committees are possible, if a committee is to contain at least one member of each gender?

16. A roulette wheel is numbered consecutively from 101 to 450. What is the probability that the
wheel when rotated stops at a number with a hundreds digit of 3?

17. Seventy percent of the members of a group are women and 35 percent of those women are
musicians. If one member of the study group is to be selected at random, what is the probability
that the member selected is a woman musician?

18. The probability that a certain coin will turn up tails on any given toss is 1/2. If the coin is
tossed 5 times, what is the probability that on at least one of the tosses the coin will turn up
tails?

20. Amit, Banagir, and Chulshul each independently can solve a problem. If their individual
probabilities for success are 2/3, 3/4 and 4/5 respectively then, what is the probability that Amit
and Banagir, but not CHulshul will solve the problem?
