Quarter 1 – Module 2:
Circulatory System
Blood Pumping
1
Lesson Let’s S.T.A.R.T U.P!
2 Circulatory System
What is Circulatory System?
• It is also called as cardiovascular system, a series of organs responsible for
transporting basic nutrients, gases and other chemicals needed by the human
body.
• It is a system responsible for eliminating wastes that cells produce.
What are the different parts of Circulatory System?
The different parts of circulatory system are the heart, blood vessels and blood.
• Heart
- It pumps the blood throughout the body.
- It is divided into two main chambers, the atria on the upper part and
ventricles on the lower part of the heart.
a. Atria – are chambers that receive blood that is being pumped by
the ventricle. There are two atria in the heart, the left atrium and
right atrium.
b. Ventricles – are chambers that pump the blood to the atria. There
are two ventricles found in the heart, the left ventricle and the
right ventricle.
- The heart has four one-way valves located between each atrium and
ventricle to prevent the blood from flowing back.

• Blood Vessel
- It carries the blood throughout the body.
- It is of three types such as:
a. Arteries – carry the oxygenated blood away from the heart to
cells, tissues and organs of the body.
b. Veins – carry deoxygenated blood to the heart. The blood vessels
near your heart are thicker compared to others to avoid being
torn off when pressure is exerted due to blood pumping. Blood
vessels farther from the heart are thinner.
c. Capillaries – known to be the smallest blood vessels which
connect the smallest veins known as venules to smallest arteries
known as arterioles. It is where gas exchange occurs.

• Blood
- It carries the materials throughout the body.
- It is composed of plasma, a straw-colored liquid composed of 90%
water and 10% dissolved gases, salts nutrients, enzymes, hormones,
wastes and proteins and blood cells.
- Blood cells are of three types namely:
a. Red Blood Cells (RBCs) – also called as erythrocytes. The
main component of the RBCs is the pigment known as
hemoglobin.
b. White Blood Cells (WBCs) – also called leukocytes. It is
responsible primarily for defending the body against
infections, parasites and bacteria.
c. Platelets – also called as thrombocytes. It is involved in
clotting process.
What are the different types of Blood Circulation?
