CLASSIFICATION OF PUMPS

Definition of a Pump
A pump is a mechanical device used to move liquids from one place to another by adding energy to
the fluid.

1. Classification Based on Mechanical Principle of Operation

(i) Displacement Pumps

Definition: Displacement pumps move a fixed amount of liquid during each cycle.
Working Principle: Liquid is trapped in a chamber and forced out by reducing the chamber volume.
Applications: Hydraulic systems, oil pumping, chemical dosing.

(ii) Centrifugal Pumps

Definition: Centrifugal pumps use rotational energy to move liquid.
Working Principle: Liquid enters the impeller center and is thrown outward by centrifugal force.
Applications: Water supply, irrigation, cooling systems.

(iii) Air Lift Pumps

Definition: Air lift pumps use compressed air to lift liquid.
Working Principle: Air is injected into the liquid, reducing density and causing it to rise.
Applications: Deep wells, sewage pumping.

(iv) Miscellaneous Pumps

Definition: Pumps operating on special principles other than centrifugal or displacement.
Examples: Jet pumps, hydraulic ram pumps, electromagnetic pumps.

2. Classification Based on Type of Power Required

(i) Steam Engine Pumps

Definition: Pumps driven by steam engines.
Applications: Old power plants, industrial boilers.

(ii) Diesel Engine Pumps

Definition: Pumps powered by diesel engines.
Applications: Irrigation, construction sites, emergency pumping.

(iii) Electrically Driven Pumps

Definition: Pumps powered by electric motors.
Applications: Domestic water supply, industrial systems.

3. Classification Based on Type of Service Called For

(i) Low Lift Pumps

Definition: Pumps used for lifting liquid to small heights (up to 15 m).
Applications: Drainage, irrigation canals.

(ii) High Lift Pumps

Definition: Pumps used for lifting liquid to great heights (above 15 m).
Applications: High-rise buildings, water towers.

Conclusion
Pump classification helps engineers select the correct pump for efficient and reliable operation.
