The Impact of Reading Habits on the
Academic Performance of Junior High
School Students
A Sample Research Paper
Abstract
This study investigates the relationship between reading habits and the academic
performance of junior high school students. A total of 100 students from Grade 9
participated in the study. Using surveys and academic records, the research found that
students with strong reading habits demonstrate higher comprehension skills and better
grades in English and other content subjects. The findings highlight the importance of
promoting a culture of reading in schools to improve learning outcomes.
Chapter 1: Introduction
Reading is a fundamental skill that serves as the foundation for lifelong learning. In
education, it enhances vocabulary, critical thinking, and comprehension. However, the rise
of digital media and entertainment has reduced students’ interest in reading books. This
study aims to explore how reading habits affect the academic performance of junior high
school students.
Statement of the Problem
1. What are the reading habits of junior high school students?
2. How do these reading habits influence their academic performance?
3. What challenges do students face in developing good reading habits?
Significance of the Study
The results of this research will benefit students, teachers, and parents by providing
insights into how reading habits contribute to academic success. Schools may also use the
findings to strengthen reading programs.
Chapter 2: Review of Related Literature
Previous studies suggest a strong link between reading and academic achievement.
According to Anderson (2019), regular reading increases comprehension and vocabulary.
Smith & Lee (2020) found that students who read at least 30 minutes daily performed
better in standardized tests. In the Philippine context, Cruz (2021) emphasized that reading
programs in schools help bridge learning gaps.
These studies support the idea that encouraging reading among students contributes to
improved performance in various subjects.
Chapter 3: Methodology
Research Design
The study employed a descriptive-correlational design to determine the relationship
between reading habits and academic performance.
Participants
100 Grade 9 students from a public high school were selected through random sampling.
Instruments
- Survey questionnaire on reading frequency, preferences, and attitudes.
- Academic records (English and overall grades).
Data Analysis
Descriptive statistics summarized reading habits, while Pearson correlation was used to
determine the relationship between reading and academic performance.
Chapter 4: Results and Discussion
Findings
- 60% of students read less than 15 minutes daily, mostly online content.
- 25% read books or academic materials regularly.
- Students with strong reading habits had an average grade of 88, while those with poor
reading habits averaged 81.
Discussion
The findings confirm that consistent reading enhances academic performance. Students
who dedicate more time to reading demonstrated better comprehension and critical
thinking skills. Lack of interest, limited resources, and distractions such as social media
were major barriers.
Chapter 5: Conclusion and Recommendations
Conclusion
Reading habits significantly affect the academic performance of junior high school students.
Strong reading practices correlate with higher grades and better comprehension.
Recommendations
1. Schools should implement sustained reading programs.
2. Parents must encourage at-home reading by providing books and limiting gadget use.
3. Students are encouraged to dedicate at least 30 minutes daily to reading.
