Tutorial 4

The document presents two structural mechanics problems involving stress analysis. Problem 1 requires calculating the average normal stress in a truss strut and the average shear stress in a bolt subjected to double shear. Problem 2 involves determining average normal and shear stresses in a bar under axial load, including their variation with orientation and maximum values.

Problem 1.
The frame is subjected to the load of 3.6 kN. The cross section of truss strut DE is 30 mm by
30 mm. The bolt has a diameter of 6 mm and is subjected to double shear. Determine

Problem 2:
The bar has a cross sectional area A and is subjected to the axial load P.
(a) Determine the average normal and average shear stresses acting over the shaded section,
which is oriented at θ from the vertical plane. Plot the variation of these stressed as a
function of θ (0o ≤ θ ≤90o).
(b) Determine the maximum values for the average normal and shear stress respectively, as
well as the corresponding orientation.
(c) Determine the relationship between the average normal stress and the average shear
stress.
