Tutorial 2: Steam tables and the application of the first law
Question 1
Determine the state (i.e., compressed liquid, saturated liquid, it is saturated but I can’t give
further details, saturated vapour, mixture of vapour and liquid, superheated vapour) of steam
with the following properties
a) T=120oC, 101.42 kPa
b) T=210 oC, 1907.7kPa
c) T=100oC, h=2000 kJ/kg
d) P=101.42kPa, v= 1.6720m3/kg
e) T=60oC, u=2762.4 kJ/kg
f) T=60oC, 101.42 kPa
If the steam is a mixture of vapour and liquid, determine the quality of the steam
Question 2
Steam is contained in a l.2 m3 volume at a pressure of 3 MPa and a quality of 0.8. The pressure
is held constant. What is the final temperature under the following process:
a) 3 MJ of heat is added
b) 30 MJ of heat is added
c) Sketch the process on a T - v diagram.
Question 3
Calculate the heat transfer necessary to raise the temperature of 2 kg of steam, at a constant
pressure of 100 kPa
a) from 50°C to 400°C
b) from 400°C to 750°C.
Question 4
A 0.2 m3 rigid volume contains steam at 600 kPa and a quality of 0.8. If l000 kJ of heat is
added, determine the final temperature.
Question 5
How much heat must be added to a 0.3m3 rigid volume containing water at 200°C and pressure
1 MPa in order that the final temperature be raised to 800oC?
Question 6
A turbine accepts superheated steam at 50 bar and 650°C and rejects it as saturated vapor
at 14KPa. Predict its power output if the mass flowrate of the steam is 450 kg/min. Also,
calculate the velocity at the exit if the outlet pipe has a diameter of 1.2 meters.
Question 7
Superheated steam at 40 bar absolute and 500oC flows at a rate of 250 kg/min to an adiabatic
turbine, where it expands to 5 bar. The turbine develops 1500 kW. From the turbine, the steam
flows to a heater. From the turbine the steam flows to a heater, where it is reheated isobarically
to its initial temperature. Neglect kinetic energy changes.
a) Write an energy balance on the turbine and use it to determine the outlet stream
temperature
b) Write an energy balance on the heater and use it to determine the required heat input
(kW) to the stream
c) Verify that an overall energy balance on the two-unit process is satisfied
d) Suppose the turbine and the outlet pipes both have diameters of 0.5 meter. Show that it
is reasonable to neglect the change in kinetic energy for this unit
