Meaning, Definition and Importance of Yoga
Meaning of Yoga
The word Yoga is derived from the Sanskrit word “Yuj”, meaning union. Yoga is the union of body,
mind, and soul. It promotes physical health, mental peace, emotional balance, and spiritual growth.
Definitions of Yoga
Patanjali: “Yoga is the control of the modifications of the mind.”
Bhagavad Gita: “Yoga is skill in action.”
Yoga Vasistha: “Yoga is a skillful process to calm the mind.”
Importance of Yoga

Ashtanga Yoga (Eight Limbs of Yoga)
Ashtanga Yoga, introduced by Maharishi Patanjali, consists of eight limbs:

Asteya – Non-stealing
Brahmacharya – Wise use of energy
Aparigraha – Non-possessiveness
2. Niyama (Personal Discipline)

6. Dharana
Concentration of the mind on a single object.
7. Dhyana
Meditation; uninterrupted flow of concentration.
8. Samadhi
Highest state of consciousness and union with the universal self.

Procedure: Forceful exhalation and passive inhalation with abdominal movement.
Benefits:
Cleans respiratory passages.

Not recommended for slipped disc patients.
Trataka
Procedure: Steady gazing at a fixed object or flame without blinking.
Benefits:
Improves eyesight.
Enhances concentration.
Calms the mind.
Precautions:
Not suitable for epilepsy patients.
Children should avoid candle trataka.
Jal Neti
Procedure: Cleansing the nasal passages with lukewarm saline water.
Benefits:
Removes mucus and dust.
Prevents cold and cough.
Helps reduce headaches and sinus issues.
Vamana Dhauti
Procedure: Drinking lukewarm saline water and voluntarily expelling it.
Benefits:
Cleans the stomach.
Reduces acidity and indigestion.
Helps relieve sore throat and cough.

Pranayama is the control and regulation of breath to improve physical and mental health.

Puraka – Inhalation
Kumbhaka – Retention of breath

1. Anulom-Vilom (Nadi Shodhana)
