Cooling Load Assignment

The assignment requires calculating the total cooling load of a specified room using the CLTD/CLF method for a given date and time. Students must determine U-values, conductive heat gains, solar heat gains, and internal heat gains, while preparing a summary table of the results. The final cooling capacity should be reported in watts, kilowatts, and tons of refrigeration, with all calculations and references clearly documented.

Assignment: Cooling Load Calculation by CLTD/CLF Method

HVAC / Refrigeration and Air Conditioning

Student Name Student ID
Course Title Submission Date
Marks Method CLTD/CLF Method

Problem Statement
Calculate the total cooling load of the room shown in Fig. 1 using the CLTD/CLF method. The calculation is required
for 12 April at 17:00 h. Use standard ASHRAE table values for CLTD, CLF, SHGF, surface resistance, and heat gain
factors wherever necessary. Clearly state all assumptions and table values used.

Given Data
Parameter Value / Description
Room dimensions 10 m × 10 m × 3 m
Indoor design condition 25.5°C dry-bulb temperature and 50% relative humidity
Calculation date and time 12 April, 17:00 h
Latitude 24°N; use this value for ASHRAE CLTD correction, if required
Outdoor/open-space temperature 33°C dry-bulb temperature
North adjacent space Unconditioned space at 30°C
Sunlit external walls; metal cladding, G-type construction, 75
West and south walls
mm insulation, dark-colored surface
North and east partition walls 127 mm brick wall with 25 mm plaster on both sides
Roof Type 4 roof with 50 mm insulation, without suspended ceiling
Area = 6 m²; U = 2.86 W/m²·K; 13 mm thickness; light
Window/glass
construction
Door Wooden door; area = 2 m²
Floor No heat transfer through the floor
Air exchange rate 1 air change per hour
Fluorescent lighting; average lighting density = 25 W/m²; light
Lighting
construction
Occupancy 5 occupants
Equipment 1 laptop; rated power = 300 W

Required Tasks
1. Determine the U-values for the roof, external walls, partition walls, and door using the provided construction
details and standard thermal-resistance data.
2. Calculate conductive heat gain through shaded or non-sunlit surfaces, including partition walls, glass, and door,
using Q = U A ΔT.
3. Calculate conductive heat gain through sunlit surfaces, including roof, south wall, west wall, and glass, using Q = U
A CLTD.
4. Apply the corrected CLTD method for sunlit surfaces and show the correction factors used.
5. Calculate the solar heat gain through the glass using suitable SHGF, shading coefficient, and CLF values.
6. Calculate the sensible and latent heat gains due to air exchange/infiltration.
7. Calculate internal heat gains from occupants, lighting, and laptop/equipment.
8. Prepare a summary table showing sensible heat load, latent heat load, total heat load, and percentage contribution
of each load component.
9. Determine the required cooling capacity in tons of refrigeration (TR), using 1 TR = 3.517 kW.

Submission Requirements
• Show all calculations step by step, including table values and assumptions.
• Draw a clear cooling-load summary table with separate columns for sensible load and latent load.
• Report the final answer in watts, kilowatts, and tons of refrigeration.
• Attach references for any ASHRAE table values used.
