Diary Entry – Definition
A diary is a personal document. It records an individual’s account (description of events,
thoughts and feelings) of a day in their life. Diary entries have features of a personal form of
writing.
A diary entry should be—
1. Dated:
• Date, Day, Time and Year of Entry: Friday, 25 April 2025.
2. Written naturally:
• Written in the first person: Feelings are documented—I couldn’t believe what happened...it
was a dream come true and I am extremely happy.
• Informal, conversational style: Who? When? Where? How? Why?
3. Truthful and Friendly:
• The diary is to be treated as a person/confidante to whom you can confide Dear Diary.
So, there you are, now you know the surprise gift I am planning to make and present my
Mom for Mother’s Day.
4. Comprehensive:
• Comprehensive entries with specific details to recreate the situation —At six o’clock in the
morning, just as the sun was rising, my phone rang, and I received the best news. A
kindhearted stranger had found my watch.
• Free and easy-flowing record of a train of thought— well, let me think... what was the best
thing that happened today...?

Question: Today you visited a zoo which made you sad about the plight of caged animals. So, you
decided to write a diary entry of 100-120 words about your feelings.
Answer:
25 April 2025, Friday
10:00 p.m.
Dear Diary
It was quite an exciting and thrilling day for me as our class teacher took us to a zoo today. I was
quite excited about the trip because I love animals. However, it turned out to be one of the saddest
experiences of my life.
We saw many birds and animals in the zoo. Alas! They didn’t look happy in their cages. There were
colorful parrots and lovebirds. They looked sad in their small enclosures. I am sure they miss the

blue skies. The plight of the lion, tiger and leopard was not much better either. I guess that is a result
of their sedentary life. They get absolutely no opportunities to walk or run. They pace their small
cages up and down looking restive and angry.
I am not saying that zoos are bad. They do protect many endangered species. Still, it hurts me to
see wild animals caged for our entertainment. I know I can’t do anything for them, but I can’t help
feeling bad for them. I don’t think I will visit a zoo again.
Good night, dear diary.
