INTRODUCTION
Do you read and/or listen to horoscopes? Have you wondered how these forecasts and
“practical advice” were arrived at? Have you listened to statements about compatibilities and incompatibilities
between people based on their zodiac signs? ("He's Aries; you're Capricorn. You two aren't compatible.")

Have you tried looking for your zodiac constellation in the night sky? Thousands of years ago, the
Greeks have named the groupings of stars in the sky with characters and objects in their mythologies. In
effect, their stories have been “archived” in the sky for all to see. Now, are our life stories also “written in the
stars”? Is it a group right to base our actions on these patterns of stars in the sky?

TIME NEEDED TO COMPLETE: 1 Week

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
At the end of this module the students shall be able to:
1. describe the characteristics of different types of stars;
2. illustrate the arrangement of stars in a group;
3. identify some of the star groups using a star chart;
4. describe the groups into which stars are classified;
5. observe that the position of a constellation changes in the course of a night; and
6. use a star chart to demonstrate which constellations may be observed at different
times of the year.
Pre- Assessment
Let’s find out how much you already know about the topic. Write the letter of the best answer.
1 . Which of the following stars is most similar to the Sun?
A. red giants C. main sequence stars
B. white dwarfs D. neutron stars
2. The brightest star in the constellation Canis Major, is , while the only fixed star, in the
constellation Ursa Major (Big Bear or Big Dipper) is .
A. Sirius ; Polaris C. Rigel ; Antares
B. Polaris ; Sirius D. Betelgeuse ; Polaris
3. Aldebaran is the brightest star in the constellation , while Antares is the brightest in the
constellation .
A. Orion ; Scorpio C. Scorpio ; Taurus
B. Taurus ; Scorpio D. Bootes ; Big Dipper
4. Characters of Greek mythology, written thousands of years ago, are immortalized as the names of
the constellations. Until now, we see that some of them closely resemble the human or animal figures
they are named after. From this, it can be inferred that .
A. stars move together from west to east
B. stars move a bit, but they are confined within their constellations
C. stars are fixed in their constellations
D. the grouping of stars is subjective – a product of human imagination instead of natural laws
5. Pictured above is the constellation Canis Major, as seen above the eastern horizon an hour after
sunset. How will it look like at the western horizon, an hour before sunrise the following day?

FIRM- UP
Star Characteristics

What are stars?

 Stars are balls of gas that release energy from inside themselves.
 They are formed in space in large clouds of gas and dust called nebulae
 Atoms inside the nebula accelerate inward due to the force of gravity and they collide
rapidly with each other, causing the center of the nebula to become very dense and
hot, causing the temperature of the protostar to rise.
 The object switches to become a “true star” and it is then able to make its own heat
and light.
 The life of the star then depends on its mass.
 In order to be recognized as a star, it has to have characteristics

Activity 1: Book Concept Reading

DESCRIPTION: Read about the characteristics of stars: mass and size, color and brightnes on your textbook
from pages 200-202 and answer the following questions:
1. What are the different groups of stars? What are the different characteristics that are the basis for
grouping the stars?
2. What are the two factors that determine how bright stars appear to us here on Earth?
3. Which star is the hottest based on color?
