The research proposal titled 'Factors Influencing Students’ Participation in Physical Education' aims to explore the various factors affecting Grade 11 students' involvement in PE at Saint Columban College. Key factors identified include the availability and quality of facilities, socioeconomic status, and cultural beliefs, which all significantly influence student engagement. The study seeks to provide insights that can help create more inclusive and effective PE programs, benefiting students, teachers, and school administrators.

Slide 1: Title Slide

"Good day everyone. We are pleased to present our research proposal entitled 'Factors Influencing
Students’ Participation in Physical Education.' I am Hydra Mae Malintad, and with me is Bridget Dawn
Balsamo. Together, we aim to explore the different factors affecting student involvement in PE,
particularly among Grade 11 students at Saint Columban College."

Slide 2: Introduction

Let me begin our presentation by discussing the introduction of our study, which focuses on Physical
Education or PE as a vital element of student development.

First, Physical Education is a core part of holistic education. It helps students grow physically, socially,
and emotionally. According to Park and Lee (2023), PE contributes to well-being, reduces stress, and
improves students' ability to adapt to school life.

Second, PE also brings significant academic benefits. It supports cognitive development and encourages
social interaction. As noted by Martins et al. (2022), students who regularly participate in PE often
demonstrate healthier behaviors and improved academic performance.

However, despite these benefits, we are seeing a decline in student participation. There's increasing
inconsistency in how students engage in PE, and common issues include a lack of motivation, frequent
absenteeism, and failure to submit required tasks.

These brings us to the objectives of our study. We aim to investigate how facilities, socioeconomic
status, and cultural beliefs and practices influence Grade 11 students’ participation in PE. Our goal is to
understand how these factors affect participation levels so that we can help create more inclusive and
effective PE programs."

Slide 4: Review of Related Literature – Student Participation

This section presents the literature related to the conduct of this research. Below are
readings gathered as background information to understand previous research concerning this
study.
[First Point: Student Participation in Physical Education]

“Participation in Physical Education is crucial as it contributes to students’ physical fitness, social

interaction, discipline, and mental health. Studies, such as by Araujo et al. (2024), that regular PE
attendance is linked to reduced social isolation and better mental health among adolescents. However,
PE is sometimes seen as overly competitive, which can lead to avoidance. Low self-confidence and fear
of judgment also discourage many students from engaging, as noted by George Mason University in
2023.”

“Now let’s take a closer look at the factors that influence participation in PE.”
As student participation in Physical Education varies across contexts, it is influenced by
several interconnected factors. In this study, based on insights from existing literature, facilities,
socioeconomic status, cultural beliefs, and practices are identified as key factors affecting student
engagement and participation in PE classes.

[Second Point: Facilities]

“One major factor is the availability and quality of PE facilities. Schools that are well-equipped with
gyms, courts, and fitness tools provide environments that support active participation. Inclusive and safe
facilities also help students feel welcome and encouraged to join PE classes. In contrast, poor facilities
can hinder learning and discourage involvement, as highlighted in studies by Nur & Malik (2021), and
others.”

[Third Point: Socioeconomic Status]

“Socioeconomic status is another significant factor. Students from higher socioeconomic backgrounds
often have better access to resources and supportive environments. On the other hand, those from low-
SES families face challenges such as cost, lack of facilities, and limited inclusivity. These disparities can
prevent equal participation in PE, and underscore the need for supportive and equitable programs, as
emphasized by researchers like Ke et al. (2022) and Griffiths et al. (2020).”

[Fourth Point: Cultural Belief and Practices]

“Cultural beliefs also play a powerful role. Students’ traditions and cultural practices shape their
attitudes toward PE. For example, activities like dance or martial arts may enhance engagement through
cultural appreciation. However, in some cases, cultural or religious restrictions can limit participation.
That’s why creating respectful and inclusive environments is essential, particularly for students from
diverse backgrounds.”

[Fifth Point: Academic Performance in PE]

we consider academic performance. Physical activity supports traits like self-discipline and openness,
which are valuable for academic success. In the Philippine K–12 system, PE grades are based on
competencies and individual performance. While factors like school facilities and culture have been
studied separately, there’s limited research on how they all combine to affect PE participation. Our study
aims to address this gap and support more effective and inclusive education strategies.”

“In summary of the presented RRL, PE participation is influenced by a combination of physical, social,
economic, cultural, and academic factors. Understanding these can help us create better programs and
policies that encourage all students to take part in physical education.”
Slide 9: Conceptual Framework

This illustrates the relationship between various factors influencing students’ participation in
Physical Education. It shows that the students’ level of participation is affected by several key
elements categorized under students’ level of influence. These elements include the availability
and quality of facilities, the students’ socioeconomic status (SES), and their cultural beliefs and
practices.

The goal of this study is to determine the factors influencing students’ level of participation in
Grade 11 Physical Education. Specifically, this study aims to answer the following questions:

Slide 11: Scope and Limitation

Script:
"Our study focuses on Grade 11 students at Saint Columban College, Pagadian City. It will be conducted
during the second semester of School Year 2024–2025. The study is limited to students enrolled in PE
across STEM, ABM, and HUMSS strands.

Slide 12: Significance of the Study

"This study is beneficial for various stakeholders. School administrators can implement targeted
improvements, while PE teachers gain insights for effective instruction. Students will understand factors
affecting their engagement, and future researchers can build on our findings to explore related topics."

This time let me now turn it over to my partner who will discuss the chapter 2 of our study. Thank you.
