Objectives:

 To identify primary navigation instruments used in aircraft.

 To understand the function of ADF, VOR, DME, GPS, and ILS instruments.
 To locate navigation instruments on the cockpit panel.
 To recognize instrument indications and their relevance to navigation.
 To develop familiarity with navigation system terminology and interconnections.
 To improve understanding of how instruments support en-route and approach navigation.

Theory:

Aircraft navigation instruments provide critical information for determining position, direction,
distance, and approach guidance. Common navigation instruments include ADF (Automatic
Direction Finder) for relative bearing, VOR (VHF Omnidirectional Range) for azimuth
guidance, DME (Distance Measuring Equipment) for slant range, GPS for satellite-based
navigation, and ILS (Instrument Landing System) for approach guidance. Correct identification
and understanding of these instruments allow pilots and maintenance personnel to safely
interpret and operate navigation systems.

Precautions:

 Ensure aircraft or trainer electrical power is applied according to AMM procedures.

 Avoid operating instruments without instructor authorization.
 Do not manipulate internal components of navigation systems.
 Handle displays and controls carefully to prevent damage.
 Observe ESD and safety precautions in the cockpit.
 Switch off electrical power after the observation session.

Procedure:

Preparation:

1. Review cockpit layout and navigation instrument diagrams in the AMM.

2. Prepare a checklist of navigation instruments to be identified.
3. Ensure power supply to cockpit or trainer instruments.

Identification and Observation:

4. Identify ADF receiver and indicator and locate its position on the panel.
5. Identify VOR indicator, control panels, and receivers.
6. Locate DME indicators and understand their relation to VOR or standalone units.
7. Identify GPS navigation displays and control units.
8. Locate ILS instruments such as localizer, glideslope, and approach indicators.
9. Observe instrument indications and correlate them with diagrammed functions.

Completion:
10. Record identified instruments, their locations, and basic functions.
11. Discuss observations and clarifications with the instructor.
