Identifying parts of scaffolding.

Parts of a Portable Scaffolding:

1. Outriggers are usually 2x2’s used to hold platforms.
2. Uprights or Posts are used to support the structure
3. Platforms are raised floors used to step on by worker while working.
4. Diagonal Braces are 2x2’s used to prevent lateral movements.
5. Cleats are 2x2’s used to support outriggers.

Safety Rules, Hints Regarding Construction of Scaffolding.

Safety Rules in the Construction of Scaffolding
1. Use strong lumber for the scaffolding. Never use decayed lumber or lumber with knots, wind shakes and
splinters because they easily break.
2. Properly brace the uprights of the scaffolding to prevent lateral movement.
3. Nail all the platforms to their supports. If the platforms are not nailed, they might slip or tip off.
4. Place enough support for the platform.
5. Avoid long protruding platforms beyond the supports. If they can’t be avoided, place another support at the
end. Unsupported overhanging platforms may break or tip off when stepped upon.
6. Properly secure the supports of the bracket and cantilever scaffolds.

Hints in the Construction of Scaffolds.

The construction and location of the different parts of scaffolding should be
well planned so that they will not affect the proper placing of other of the
building. A haphazard placing of the different parts of scaffolding might be
make it necessary to dismantle and reconstruct the scaffold. This is a waste of
time effort and money.
The platform should be at a convenient height so that the workers on the
platform do not have to stoop or stand on their toes while doing the job.
The platforms should be at level, unless the particular job requires a sloping
platform.

Construction of scaffolding in accordance to plan and details.

Materials, Tools and Equipment:
 12 pcs. 2” x 2” x 10’,
 2 pcs. 2” x 10” x 10’
 4 kgs. Assorted CWN.
 Claw hammer
 Pull-push rule
 Pencil
 Crow bar
 Cross cut saw
 Try square
 Circular saw
Procedure:
1. Prepare all tools, materials and equipment needed.
2. Measure all parts of portable scaffolding based on schedule of cutting.
3. Cut all parts of the scaffolding.
4. Using fasteners, connect outriggers to upright supports.
5. Secure cleats to outrigger.
6. Nail properly diagonal braces to the upright support to prevent lateral movement.
7. Nail all platforms to their supports.
8. Cut all protruding platforms.
9. Check the rigidity of the structure.
10. Present your finished work for class assessment

Procedure in Dismantling Scaffolding

Materials, Tools and Equipment:
1. Scaffolding
2. Wrecking bar
3. Claw hammer
4. Nail box
Procedure:
1. Remove the connection of platform for outrigger using wrecking bar. Use claw hammer to drive out the
fastener, then pull out the nail from the platform.
2. Remove the diagonal braces from the upright supports.
3. Lay down the upright supports and remove the outrigger from the upright support.
4. Drive out all fasteners using claw hammer.
5. Pull out all fasteners using wrecking bars (Do not use claw hammer in pulling bigger fasteners.)
6. Arrange and restore all dismantled parts.
7. How will your work be evaluated

Forms
 Concrete mixture is generally semi-fluid material that produces the shape of
anything to which it is poured. Thus, construction form is used to produce the
desired size, shape and form of concrete.
 Characteristics of forms for concrete:
- it must be watertight
- simple and economically designed to be removed and reassembled without damaging themselves or to
concrete.
- strong and rigid enough to sustain the weight and horizontal pressure of fresh concrete.
 Selection of forms depends upon the following considerations:
- the cost of material
- the construction and assembling cost.
- the number of times it could be used.
- the strength and resistance to pressure and tear and wear.
 The two types of framing adopted for plywood forms are:
- the longitudinal rib type
- the perpendicular rib type
The longitudinal rib type – is generally economical. The length of ribs are
preserved which could be utilized later.

Fabricate forms for column

Procedure for construction:
1. Read and interpret detail drawing.
2. Prepare all tools and materials needed.
3. Mark all 2x2’s and plywood for cutting
Note: Always follow schedule of cutting.
4. Cut all marked materials.
Note: Measure twice before cutting.
5. Assemble and fasten all members of the ribs, adopting the plan and details.
6. Attached and fasten the board on the frame.
7. Apply good housekeeping
8. Let your teacher check your finished work using the guiding criteria.

Formworks are stripped according to acceptable procedure

 Tools: Wrecking bar, claw hammer, cold chisel, nail box

 Equipment: Scaffolding/H-frame

Procedure:

- Select appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to use for stripping forms.
- Using wrecking bar, remove all braces around the forms.
- Detach the outer form using wrecking bar.
Note: be careful not to destroy the form and concrete.
- Re-assemble the forms.
- Let your teacher assess your work for evaluation
