MODULE 1: UNDERSTANDING CREATIVITY
Creativity Definition
Spearman (1931) defined creativity as “the power of human mind to create new contents by
transforming relations and generating new correlates”.
Meaning and Definition:- Creativity means having a talent for combining ideas in unique or unusual
way. From a managerial perspective, creativity means thinking of original and new alternatives to
solve existing problems.
CHARACTERISTICS OF CREATIVITY

THE CREATIVE PROCESS
Preparation: this stage start by collecting information and ideas from different sources
Incubation: the idea is allowed to grow naturally in a relaxed environment . the mind is
free to think and explore the problem without pressure.
Illumination: the ideas from the first two stages comes together. The clear plan and
picture of the final idea begin to start
Evaluation: at this stage the idea is checked to see if it is successful and ready to
implement.
Implimentation: In this final stage, all the ideas and plans are put together, and the
project is started and completed.
VERIFYING AND BUILDING ON CREATIVE IDEAS
Checking and improving creative ideas is very important to turn them into useful and effective
results.
THE STAGES OF THE CREATIVE PROCESS
1. Idea Generation:
The idea generation phase is the cornerstone of the creative process, where the initial
formulation of new ideas is formed.
2. [Link] Evaluation:
After the ideas are created, the idea evaluation stage examines the generated ideas that if
they are possible and suitable for the goal.
3. Idea Verification:
In this idea verification stage, the focus is on the checking practically and real world
usefulness of the shortlisted ideas
4. Devolopement and Refinement:
Ideas that passes the verification stage move into development and refinement, where they
are turned into clear plans or sample models.
5. Testing and Simulation:
This stage is important for validating the effectiveness and feasibility of the developed idea
through proper testing and simulation.
6. Implimentation:
7. Once the idea has been tested and refined, it moves to the implementation stage, where the
idea is finally put into action.
VERIFYING THE WORKABILITY F THE IDEAS
Verifying the workability of the idea is essential to ensure they are not only innovative but also
feasible and effective for real world application.
1. Canvassing Opinions:
This means collecting feedbacks and opinions from experts and others to check whether the
idea will really work.
2. Using Simulations:
Simulations are powerful tools that use computer models to test and explore how an idea
performs under different conditions.
3. Aesthetic Assessment:
This focuses on checking the visual and design aspects of an idea. Tools like 3D rendering
and virtual reality (VR) help create realistic views of designs.
4. Process Examination:
This involves understanding and analyzing the working steps and operations of an idea
through simulations.
5. Technical Complexity:
This examines technical details and advanced aspects of an idea through simulations
BUILDING ON IDEAS
Building on creative ideas means continuous development and improvement.
1. Prototyping:
Creating physical or digital model of an idea help to explore and test its design , functionality
and possibility in real form.
2. Feedback Integration:
This process adds suggestions and insights from different sources like simulations , user
testing and experts review to improve the ides
3. [Link] For Effective Builds:
This involves checking if the developed prototype or solution meets its goals and performs
well in real situations. It includes several types of testing:
a) Functional Testing:
Checks whether the prototype or build works as planned and meets all requirements.
b) Usability Testing:
Tests how easy and comfortable it is for users to use and understand the idea.
c) Performance Testing:
Tests how the idea or model performs under different conditions, such as high use or
stress, to ensure its stability and reliability.
4. Interative Refinement:
Interactive refinement is the process of continually improving the idea through multiple
process until it reaches the best form
TECHNIQUES TO FOSTER CREATIVITY

Incubation in creativity means the process in which the mind continues to work on ideas
subconsciously (without direct effort) while a person is relaxed or taking a break from a creative
task.
It helps in the quiet development of ideas even when not actively thinking about them.
There are several key aspects of incubation in creativity:
1. Relaxation and Detachment:
This means consciously taking a break from the problem or a creative task. It helps to relax
the mind and stop active thinking for some time.
2. Unconscious processing:
Even when a person is not consciously thinking, the brain still continues to process
information related to the problem or task.
3. Time for reflection:
Incubation gives a person time to think quietly and reflect on ideas or problems from a
distance.
4. Cross fertilization of idea:
During incubation, the mind freely explores different, unrelated topics or experiences. This
can lead to new connections and help create fresh ideas.
5. Facilitation of Creativity:
Incubation is an important stage in creativity, because it allows the mind to rest and explore
freely. It helps in forming new and original ideas and solutions.
TYPES OF INCUBATION:
1. Active incubation:
In this type a person intentionally take a break from a creative task to do something
unrelated activities . this helps the mind to refresh and gain new insights later.
2. Passive incubation:
This type happens naturally when the mind is free to wander, for example while day
dreaming, showering, falling asleep. The brain still thinks about the idea without conscious
effort.
3. Forced Incubation:
This happens when there is a break or set a deadline in a creative process or problem
solving. The pause gives the mind to relax and develop new insights later
4. Environmental Incubation:
This type of incubation happens when a person is in an environment (physical or mental),
that helps the mind to think creatively and solve problems.
5. Social Incubation:
This happens when people work together and interact with others in group activities .
collaboration and discussion helps to stimulate creative thinking and new ideas.
6. Sequential Incubation:
In this type big or complex problems or tasks divided into smaller sub tasks and easier parts,
and incubating each part seperately
2. BRAINSTORMING:
Brainstorming is a creative idea used to come up with new ideas and solve problems. It allows
people to think freely and share ideas without any judgement.
Osborn suggested four main rules for effective brainstorming:
1. No criticism:Don’t judge or criticize anyone’s idea during brainstorming session
2. Freewheeling:Everyone can share any ideas that comes to mind even if it seems strange or
unrealistic.
3. Quantity over Quality:Focusos on generating large number of ideas. Having many ideas
leads to increase the chances of quality ideas and solutions.
4. [Link] and improvement:Participants should build on each other’s idea , combining
them to create innovative solutions.
[Link] PLAY:
Role play is a creative and enjoyable method to generate new ideas. It involves acting out situations
or roles related to a project to get new ideas and better understanding.
[Link] MAPPING:
Mind mapping, developed by Tony Buzan. This method is used to create and arrange ideas by
connecting them each other. It starts with one main idea in the center, and then braches out in all
directions with related words, phrases, ideas, facts , information
Common Types of Mind Mapping:
1. Basic/Classic Mind Map: Central idea with branches for main topics and sub topics.
2. Tree Mind Map: Hierarchical structure like a tree. Break down complex topics
3. Spider Diagram: Central idea with branches spreading out like spider legs, explores all
aspects
4. Flow Chart/ Process Mind Map: Shows steps or processes in an order, useful for planning
5. Concept Map: Focuses on the relationship between ideas with linking words.
6. Bubble Map: Ideas are shown as bubbles connected with lines. Shows relationship between
ideas

Creative thinking method to find new ideas and solve problems.
Each letters stands for a different way of think:
S – Substitute: replacing a part of a process with another to provide alternative solutions
C – Combine: merging two or more ideas, stages of process, product into single, more
efficient output.
A – Adapt: change the idea to make it better.
M – Modify, Minify, or Magnify: change size or process to improve it
P – Put to another use: Putting current things or processes to another purpose to solve
problems
E – Eliminate or Elaborate: remove or expand the part of the process to improve results
R – Reverse or Rearrange: Change the order or direction of the process to find new
possibilities.
[Link] THINKING
It is a creative way of solving problems by thinking in the opposite way from usual or traditional
method

Provocation is a creative thinking method to get new ideas by saying or imagining something
unusual, surprising or even illogical.
