Lesson: Articles (A, An, The)
Objective:
understanding the usage of a, an, and the and be able to use them correctly in sentences
through practical application.
I. Introduction to Articles
Definition:
Articles are words used before nouns to clarify whether they are specific or general. There are
two types:
1. Indefinite Articles: A and An (used for general things).
2. Definite Article: The (used for specific things).
II. Rules and Detailed Explanation
1. Indefinite Articles: A and An
Usage:
• They are used when referring to a singular, countable noun that is not specific
or mentioned for the first time.
Rules:
1. Use “a” before words that begin with a consonant sound:
• a cat, a dog, a book, a university (consonant sound “yoo”).
2. Use “an” before words that begin with a vowel sound (a, e, i, o, u):
• an apple, an egg, an hour (silent “h”), an honest person.
3. “A” and “An” only appear with singular nouns:
• Correct: I saw a bird.
• Incorrect: I saw a birds.
Examples:
• She bought a car yesterday.
• I saw an elephant in the zoo.
• He needs an umbrella because it’s raining.
2. Definite Article: The
Usage:
• It is used to refer to specific or known nouns.
Rules:
1. Use “the” when both the speaker and listener know what is being referred to:
• I saw the cat that lives in our garden.
2. Use “the” for unique or one-of-a-kind items:
• the sun, the moon, the Earth, the Eiffel Tower.
3. Use “the” with nouns that have been previously mentioned:
• I saw a dog. The dog was very friendly.
4. Use “the” with superlatives:
• He is the best player in the team.
5. Use “the” with specific groups or locations:
• Rivers: the Nile.
• Oceans: the Atlantic Ocean.
• Countries with “states” or “republics”: the United States, the Philippines.
Examples:

• We visited the Great Wall of China last summer.
