Today’s Topic
•Learning and its nature
•Types of Learning
•Domains of learning
Learning
• It is the process of acquisition of knowledge
• It is the process of acquisition of Skill
• It is the relatively permanent change in behaviour
• It is the process of Adaptation of new thought and ideas
Definition
• Gates- “Learning as the behavioural modification which occur as a
result of experience as well as training.”
• Crow and Crow- “Learning as the process of acquisition of
knowledge, habits and attitudes.”
• Gardner Murphy- “The term covers every modification of behavior
to meet environmental requirements.”
Nature and characteristics of Learning
• It is purposeful
• It is adjustment
• It is lifelong process
• It is universal
• Learning is the product of activity and environment.
• Learning helps in attainment of teaching – learning
objectives.
• Learning helps in the proper growth and development.
• It relies on Human needs
• It is an active process
• Learning helps in the balanced development of the personality.
• It can be both formal and informal
• It re-establishes the relationship between a stimulus and response.
• Learning is concerned about cognitive, Conative(psycho motor) and
affective aspects. Knowledge acquisition process is cognitive, any
change in the emotions is affective and Conative is acquisition of
new habits or skills.
Types of Learning
• Motor Learning: Our day to day activities like walking, running,
driving, etc, must be learnt for ensuring a good life. These
activities to a great extent involve muscular coordination.
• Verbal Learning: It is related with the language which we use to
communicate and various other forms of verbal communication
such as symbols, words, languages, sounds, figures and sign.
• Verbal learners acquire knowledge best through written and
spoken words. Be sure to offer instruction in writing
and verbally rather than visually, since verbal learners will most
likely struggle with pictures or diagrams. Read books out loud
and have your child read them back to you or others as well.
• Concept Learning: This form of learning is associated with
higher order cognitive processes like intelligence, thinking,
reasoning, etc, which we learn right from our childhood.
Concept learning involves the processes of abstraction and
generalization, which is very useful for identifying or
recognizing things.
• Concept learning also refers to a learning task in which a
human or machine learner is trained to classify objects by
being shown a set of example objects along with their class
labels. The learner will simplify what has been observed in
an example.
• Learning of Principles: Learning which is based on principles
helps in managing the work most effectively. Principles
based learning explains the relationship between various
concepts.
• Attitude Learning: Attitude shapes our behaviour to a very
great extent, as our positive or negative behaviour is based
on our attitudinal predisposition
• Problem solving: This is a higher order learning process.
This learning requires the use of cognitive abilities-such as
thinking, reasoning, observation, imagination,
generalization, etc.
• This is very useful to overcome difficult problems
encountered by the people.
• Perception learning: Sight, hearing, taste, smell and touch
are considered as the five gateway of knowledge. All the
knowledge is based on the sense of perception.
• Association learning: The individual has some mental
pictures of his previous observations. He try to link up his
new association with his previous mental picture and he
learns.
• There are other types also social learning, trial and error
learning, observational learning, behavioral learning,
conditioning learning.
Domains of Learning
❑Samuel Benjamin Bloom has described there are three domain’s of
learning in 1956. They are-
❑Cognitive domain of learning
Related to our knowledge, reasoning, memory, judgment, reasoning
etc.
❑Conative (psychomotor) domain of learning
Related to skills like writing, painting, drawing, driving, playing etc.
❑Affective domain of learning
Related to our emotion , feeling, attitude, believes etc.
Difference between learning and teaching
• All teaching implies learning but all learning does not imply
teaching
• Teaching is a social act where as learning is a personal act
• Teaching is a type of interaction and is triadic in nature
where as learning is active engagement in a subject domain
• Teaching is always linked with learning and learners where
as one does not to be taught to learn something
