Abstract

Netflix is one of the world’s leading online streaming platforms that provides a wide range of
movies, TV shows, and web series. This project focuses on analyzing Netflix’s dataset to understand
content trends, user preferences, and various patterns present on the platform.

The main objective of this study is to analyze different aspects of Netflix content such as the
distribution of movies and TV shows, release years, genres, duration, and country-wise availability.
Tools like Python, Pandas, and Matplotlib have been used for performing data analysis and
visualization.

In this project, Exploratory Data Analysis (EDA) techniques are applied to extract meaningful
insights from the dataset. Various visualizations are used to identify content growth over the years,
popular genres, and recent trends on the platform.

The analysis reveals that movies are more in number compared to TV shows on Netflix, and there
has been significant growth in content production in recent years. It also highlights that certain
genres and countries dominate the platform.

This project can be useful for understanding content strategies, improving recommendation
systems, and supporting business decision-making through data-driven insights. Overall, it provides a
better understanding of how an OTT platform like Netflix operates.
Problem Definition

Netflix hosts a vast collection of movies and TV shows across different genres, countries, and time
periods. However, due to the large volume of data, it becomes difficult to manually understand
content distribution, trends, and user preferences.

There is a need to analyze the available dataset to identify meaningful patterns such as the growth
of content over the years, the dominance of certain genres, and the distribution of movies versus TV
shows. Without proper analysis, it is challenging to extract useful insights that can support decision-
making and improve content strategies.

The problem addressed in this project is to perform a detailed analysis of Netflix’s dataset using
data analysis techniques in order to uncover hidden insights, trends, and patterns. This includes
understanding content categorization, identifying popular genres, and analyzing country-wise
contributions.

By solving this problem, the project aims to provide a clear understanding of how content is
distributed on Netflix and how data-driven insights can help improve recommendations and business
strategies.
Existing System

Netflix provides a large collection of movies and TV shows to users worldwide. However, in terms
of data understanding, the existing system mainly focuses on content streaming rather than detailed
data analysis.

Currently, users can browse and watch content, but there is limited visibility into deeper insights
such as content trends, genre popularity, and growth patterns. The platform uses internal algorithms
for recommendations, but these are not openly available for study or analysis.

From a project perspective, the existing system lacks:

 Detailed data analysis for academic purposes

 Easy access to structured insights from raw data
 Visualization of content trends and patterns
 Understanding of dataset features without technical processing

Thus, the existing system is not sufficient for extracting meaningful insights from the dataset.

Need for the System

With the rapid growth of digital content on platforms like Netflix, there is a strong need for a
system that can analyze and interpret large datasets effectively.

The need for this system arises due to the following reasons:

 To convert raw data into meaningful insights

 To understand content distribution (movies vs TV shows)
 To identify popular genres and trends
 To analyze growth of content over the years
 To support data-driven decision-making
 To improve understanding of OTT platform behavior

This system helps students and analysts to study real-world data and gain practical knowledge of data
analysis techniques.
Scope of the System

Netflix Data Analysis System focuses on analyzing the available dataset to generate meaningful
insights about the content on the platform.

The scope of the system includes examining various attributes such as type of content (movies and
TV shows), genres, release years, duration, and country-wise distribution. The system performs
exploratory data analysis (EDA) to identify patterns, trends, and relationships within the data.

It also includes the use of data visualization techniques to represent findings through graphs and
charts, making it easier to understand content growth, popular categories, and overall distribution.

This system is designed for academic and analytical purposes only. It does not interact with
Netflix’s real-time system or user data. The analysis is limited to the dataset provided and does not
include advanced predictive models or machine learning techniques.

Overall, the system helps in understanding how data can be used to extract useful information and
support decision-making in the context of an OTT platform.

The system is user-friendly and can be easily operated by students or beginners who have basic
knowledge of programming. It does not require any special training, and the results are presented in a simple
and understandable format using graphs and charts.
Fact Finding Technique

Fact-finding techniques are used to collect relevant information required for the development of the system.

 Dataset Collection:

The dataset used in this project is collected from online sources such as Kaggle. It contains information
about Netflix content like title, type, genre, release year, duration, and country.

 Literature Review:

Various research papers, articles, and previous projects related to data analysis and OTT platforms were
studied to understand concepts and methodologies.

 Observation Method:

The dataset was carefully observed to understand its structure, attributes, and possible relationships
between different variables.

 Online Research:

Information about Netflix and its working model was gathered through websites and online resources.
