Sample Exam

The document outlines a graduate-level exam for ECE 499/599: Sensors, consisting of two problems related to temperature measurement using RTDs and a photodiode for light intensity sensing. It requires calculations for sensitivity, accuracy, RMS noise voltage, and input referred noise for the RTD setup, as well as designing a signal conditioning circuit for the photodiode. Students are instructed to show their work, state assumptions, and include units for their final answers to receive partial credit.

ECE 499/599: Sensors

PROB. 1 (10 points)

A pair of PPG1021A1 RTDs (see attached data sheet) are used to make a differential
temperature measurement. RTD, RREF, is kept in an ice bath as reference. A INA102AG
instrumentation amplifier with a gain of 100 is used for signal conditioning as shown
below:

INA102AG Characteristics
Input voltage noise spectral density 30nV/Hz
Input current noise spectral density 0.3 pA/Hz
Input bias current 25 nA
Input offset current 2.5 nA
Input offset voltage 300 µV

Graduate level:
ii) Calculate the accuracy at 0°C (i.e. the error in the measured temperature at 0°C).
Assume that the fixed resistors are 1k and do not vary with temperature. Include
worst case tolerances of the RTDs and amplifier.
iii) Calculate the RMS noise voltage at the output of the amplifier. Include Johnson
noise and amplifier noise.

iv) Calculate the input referred noise in terms of temperature.

PROB. 2 (10 points)

A photodiode is used to sense the intensity of incident light.

A particular photodiode, when reverse biased in the range of 1V to 5V, produces a current
of 20mA per Watt of incident light. It also has a “dark current”, due to thermal generation
k BT

of carriers, given by I DARK  25nA e 1.1eV

.

Thus the reverse biased photodiode can be modeled as:

mA
I P  20  Incident Power
W
IP IDARK
k BT
I DARK  25nA  e 1.1eV

Design a signal conditioning circuit to connect the photodiode to a ratiometric A/D

convertor such that the A/D output is zero in the dark and full scale at 1mW illumination.
The output should be independent of supply voltage and temperature (at least to first order
around room temperature)
