Ode to My Pen: A Creative Reflection

The writer reflects on their pen as a reliable companion that has faithfully recorded their thoughts and ideas over a long period of time. However, the writer realizes they had mistreated the pen by neglecting its needs and leaving it exposed to the elements. Now, as the pen is nearing the end of its life, the writer expresses regret for the poor treatment and wishes they could do something to save the pen's life. The writer finds solace in knowing the pen was always a loyal friend and hopes that when their own time comes, they can be buried alongside the pen to continue sharing their stories together in the afterlife.

ENLIGHTENING MINDS THROUGH THE VOICE OF THE PEN

ODE TO MY PEN: A RELIABLE COMPANION

My pen wails in pain just as an unfed stomach rumbles in terrible hunger. Like a man who just received a test result showing that he has little time left to live, apparently his sorrow and terror of death cannot be measured as he starts to feel life ebb out of him, slowly.

Dear Pen, I have mistreated you for so long. You worked tirelessly for me, and after the day was done Id leave you by the window to be scorched by the sun of the day, and drenched by the cold rains of the nights. I never took your welfare and feelings into consideration; I was totally uncaring towards you my faithful companion.

You cried for a befitting shelter and I didnt respond. And you became the morning dews object of mockery. I walked the boulevards in classy attires but left you shamefully naked for the cockroaches to climb on and call a fool. Your work fetched me fame and name and yet I abandoned you for the ants and spiders to chew on like a log of plastic carcass. People came to me to give me kudos for all my thoughts that you gave life, but I selfishly kept the accolades in my head, refusing to share them with you. I fed myself till I was full, and gave you not even the crumbs dropping off my miserly table, but just swept them up and gave them to the garbage can instead. And you who worked hard all the time were starving!

Unfortunately, it is now too late to make it up to you because your time in this transient world is now very short. I can see your lifeblood running out; but here I am, come back to reconcile like the prodigal son. I have come, not to present you

with any gift, for to promise you even a beautifully-carved casket would be a terrible lie. All I have is a special message from my heart, something I always wanted to share with you even in those times of my neglect towards you, but which I failed to do, obviously.

You are the one friend who stayed with me always even though I didnt notice it. You took on the responsibility of recording my notes for me during lectures and were still the one who reproduced them during examinations. Sometimes at night, I would lie sleepless, pondering the mysteries of life. And, like a white knight, you would come to my rescue. Giving me release by way of converting those thoughts to words, after which I would be able to sleep. You were such a great companion, always speaking out what was on my mind like no other person could.

Now that youre dying, Im wondering if theres a way I could save your lifeif the doctors say you need a kidney, Id gladly donate it. Or could you need some blood to survive? Id surely give you that too.

But if you dont make it dear friend, go in peace and enjoy the solitude of the afterlife. And please bear with me; we cant go together now because Ive got to get on with life. If you could, then please resurrect on the third day to continue your inspiring work with me.

Go ahead of me my friend, but I tell you when I leave this world, I want to be laid to rest side by side with you in my six feet cubicle. And maybe we would be able to share war stories, events that happened to us during our earthly sojourns, and how to spend the eternal retirement on our hands. I know difficile est longum subito deponere amorem (it is difficult to suddenly give up a long love) but I have

to continue with life in a quest to find a way or make one since there is no noble price for quitters.

My pen...impartialsageworthy of all trustsa companion like no other. Ave atque vale (hail and farewell). culled from [Link]
